Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

"If you could live in any historical age at all, which one would you live in?" he asks, looking at her intently.

"One in which I wouldn't be accused of consorting with the devil," she answered, chuckling. "Choosing one would be hard. I like where I am now, but I can see how exciting the world wars would have been for someone who had my ability."

She shrugged. "Hold on, I'll come around and give you a hand. Then you can tell me all about your favorite historical age."

Tech waits for Fury to come around the other side of the truck and gets out with very little pain. The meds are really helping right now, which means he's going to be an unhappy camper when it comes time to sleep tonight.

"I would love to have been around when science was first taking off. It all must have seemed like magic in those days." he says.

"Of course, you can find magic anywhere you look, if you want to." Tech tells her as he adjust his coat.

"You're right, you can. What you do in the lab is magic." Sammy shoved her hands into her pockets for the walk to the door to keep from being 'overly helpful'. "Here's a silly question, did you tell your grandmother you had a driver on this trip?"

"Um, no. I didn't know I'd have one. But if you show up and I don't invite you to at least stay for a bit, she'd swear, loudly, that all her attempts to raise a fine Southern Gentleman had been in vain and we'd never hear the end of it." Tech says.

He does his best to walk to the door without limping or looking pitiful, because he'd like Fury to think that he's not /wholly/ useless or intolerant of pain.

"Silly question from me: Have you ever been to this part of the U.S. before?"

"You might want to call and let her know," she suggested gently, for her. "Just in case she'd like an advanced warning."

The diner, she noticed wasn't just a 1950s style like one she'd find in Manhattan. It seemed to be a genuine 50s restaurant, authentic down to the chrome accented tables and black and white checked linoleum. From the number of diners in the place, it seemed to be popular as well. That said good things about the food.

"I've been to New Orleans but that's about it. Is there something I should know? A code phrase or secret handshake so I don't get run out of the state?"

"You make a good point. It would only be courteous to so. I'll call her when we leave here." he says.

Fury would see the sound stage toward the back of the establishment. Several of the chairs and tables could be moved to expose room for dancing.

"Ah, New Orleans. Well, we're several miles away from there, and a whole different world. Bon Temps is pretty tight knit; small town, everyone knows everyone. But I won't let the locals get you." he grins.

Tech goes to the nearest table and pulls out a chair for Fury, then waits for her to be seated before seating himself.

"Do you dance, Fury?" he asks.

"Perhaps you should be protecting the locals from me," she teased.

She took the seat with a murmured thanks and looked around. "I took dance lessons for most of my childhood because it was the only way I was allowed to take martial arts with my father."

"What kind of dancing? And what martial arts do you know?" he asks.

"You ask a lot of questions," Sammy observed. "I was one of those scowling little girls wearing a pink tutu in ballet class. I much preferred the Taekwondo class from a S.H.I.E.L.D. instructor. He taught a mixed bag of styles as well, just to keep it interesting."

"I noticed you don't appear to have done much scrapping when you were a kid. Did Jake look out for you?"

Tech reddens with embarassment at Fury's observation.

"I apologize. I only inquire as I can't figure you out." he says. "I will not probe too deeply."

He nods at her next question.

"If you mean 'did he break the star quarterback's arm in three places the week before the state championships because he shoved me at the fair?'...then yes, he has. He tried to teach me some moves, but he didn't always have time." Tech says.

"You, of course, have never had that issue, I'm sure."

She thought she was pretty straight forward about things. Nothing difficult about that. Perhaps his inventive nature just needed to get to the bottom of everything.

"No, I didn't have a brother who cared enough to protect me from anything. I had a security detail and some good friends to back me up. Now I have good friends, a team of good agents, and spare clips."

Tech offers a small smile at that list of positives.

"What more could one ask for, without seeming ungrateful?" he asks rhetorically. No, there's no way to really follow up her statement, so Tech looks down at the menu as the an older waitress comes to take their order. Her name tag says "Pam" and she smiles at Tech and Fury as if she knows something they dont'.

"What're y'all havin' today?" she asks politely, pen at the ready.

"You can always ask for more clips."

Sammy smiled at the waitress. "Is the coffee fresh?"

Tech actually laughs aloud at Sammy's suggestion. Only she would ask for something like that and mean it.

The waitress looks at Sammy. "Oh yes. We're actually settin' on a new pot right now. Shall Ah get ya a cup?" she asks.

She takes Sammy's order and then looks to Tech.

"I'll have the bacon, egg and cheese omelet." he says. "And a glass of grape juice."

Sammy handed over the menu and felt more cheerful with the prospect of hot coffee and a roast beef sandwich. With gravy. She bet it was real gravy, too.

"Do you feel better now that you've seen your brother?"

"Somewhat. I dislike seeing him in his current circumstances, but...it is the way of things, I suppose." Tech says sadly.

"Fury...have you ever done something you thought was right at the time you were doing it, but realized later that you were wrong?" he asks.

She personally thought that Jacob Landon should be put down. There was no rehabilitation or for a man with those eyes. Tech shouldn't be chained to a brother who was already dead inside.

"I have. I think everyone has. It's a very human thing to do."

Tech nods, seemingly mollified by the answer.

"Thank you. I just needed to know that." he says.

"You should come here sometime when they have the band and dancing. Good music and a great way to spend an evening." Tech said.

Sammy watched him with with curiosity, waiting to see if he would continue the thought, but accepted his reluctance when he didn't.

She smiled when the waitress returned with a pot of coffee and a cup and saucer. The smell of coffee perked her up enormously.

"I'll remember that if I'm ever in the area again."

Tech noted that the oddest (odd to him, anyway) things made Fury smile. It was also a nice expression on her face.

"See that you do. I daresay that you could even have a good time here. And there's swing dancing spots all along the way toward Bon Temps. They make for a good way to spend an evening." he says.

The waitress passes him his omelet and Tech eats, looking almost euphoric as he does.

"Omelets are the food of the gods." Tech says happily.

Sammy found his expression amusing. She'd only witnessed that sort of euphoria when it came to her friends and chocolate.

The roast beef sandwich was placed in front of her and she found she was right. There was gravy and it looked homemade. Her stomach rumbled a little and she didn't bother looking embarrassed by it.

"I don't know about a good time. I've forgotten what those are like off the firing range." It was an attempt at humor, but maybe it struck too close to home. "Do you go dancing a lot?"

Tech nods. "I should /go/ to the firing range more often." he tells her between bites. "No use in making guns if you can't use them."

Her second question earns her an enigmatic grin from the tech specialist.

"Not as much as I did when I was younger. Gran was a dancer in her youth and later an instructor. Lots of ballroom stuff, but she.taught me about Jazz and Swing dancing. My grandfather loved to dance with her." Tech says.

"I was...okay at it."

"Is that an okay as in you managed not to smash any toes, or an okay as in you have a closet full of trophies?" She tried the coffee. It wasn't her specialty blend, but it was hot, dark and delicious. "My dad taught me to jitterbug."

Tech looks down at his plate bashfully. "It's not a closet full...just a few."

A fully-adorned mantle is just a few, right?

However, his attention snaps back to her as she mentions the jitterbug and he laughs aloud.

"I would pay good money to see you jitterbug, Fury. I don't know why, but I think you're good at it." he says.
