Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

	"That's a lot of drama," Sammy said mildly. She watched the waitress make a detour toward the pool tables to talk with the would-be football star. 	"Shame," she murmured. "Steve seemed nice. Relax and have a beer. I got this one, /babe./" She said the endearment with emphasis for anyone listening, tipping a wink at Tech. "Steve's cool; it's just the Road Crew that isn't." he says.

"The sheriff is sitting right at that table over there." Tech says, pointing to a table on the family side where several officers are eating.

"Of course, he's pretty pissed that he didn't bust Jake himself, so he might or might not help us out. Hell, he might find a way to blame the whole thing on me, for 'provoking them by showing up'." Tech says, using air quotes and rolling his eyes.

Of course, being called /babe/ by Fury, even under false pretenses makes him blush a little.

"Then I will invoke SHIELD privilege if challenged. It's best before trouble with the law happens if the sheriff realizes that Col. Fury will be here breathing fire if something happened to his agents. Until we're out of the area I'm just your girlfriend here to meet your grandmother."

She swept the room with another interested look, smiling when she met someone's eyes, and mssed any expression Tech might have. "Think you can handle that?"

	Her eyes sparkled in anticipation. Why no, she wasn't hoping for a fight, especially when she'd cheat through it. "We could play it hot with a public display of affection, but your grandmother might think it improper behavior. Otherwise, let's just enjoy having a drink." She lifted the bottle for a sip. How does a woman as class as Fury make even /beer/ look like everyone should be drinking it, no questions asked? Tech will never know.

He lifts his glass. "Sounds good." he says, taking another sip.

"Hey, Landon!" calls a voice from the direction of the pool tables. Four of the six men from the Bon Temps Road crew stride over to their table, all orange vests, red shirts and brown pants with black boots.

The leader of the group is a Black man wearing a white do-rag and dressed like the others. His right arm is oddly shaped as if it was broken and never quite healed right. He sneers at Sammy, looking her over, before glaring at Jason.

"You ain't welcome here, Landon." Stevie Ray slurs. "That animal of a brother o' yours is locked up, which is the third best thing ever happened to this town. Now, all we need is that grandma of yours to leave town and you to go with her and this town's got a chance at...bein'...good again."

Tech is quiet for a moment, though his hand does clutch his glass a little tighter.

"Stevie Ray, Ah'm havin' a night with m'lady, this evening." Tech says, his accent coming out for the first time.

"You and your friends want a drink, Ah'll buy ya one, no problem. But Ah won't let ya sit here and badmouth my Gran or insult me in front of m'lady. Be a shame if somethin' happened to yah between here and home, would it not?" he asks, looking up at the man.

The accent was a surprise and, to be honest with herself, something she'd like to hear again. Maybe when he talked about his work.

Her brows lifted at the sneer. A snobby diplomat, Stevie Ray was not. Why is it always the big lumbering ones? She invoked the Contessa's expression of bland civility and touched Tech's free hand across the table, lacing her fingers between his.

"I was wrong," she said to Tech as though they were still alone and watching an unfolding melodrama. "I always thought Southern Hospitality was all through the South. Your grandmother is such a sweet lady, too."

His thumb strokes the inside of Fury's palm as he talks to the man.

"Offer ain't gon' come 'round again, boys. Sit and drink or..."

"Fuck you, Landon! Ya ain't nothin' more n' a thug in good clothes. And this Shreveport piece o'ass just proves it." Stevie Ray yells.

"Baby, if you wanna break his face, feel free." Tech says easily.

"You did promise me a good time," she said in the same cool tone, pulling her hand from his. Shreveport piece of ass, indeed.

The bar was suddenly treated to the sight of Stevie Ray face down on the floor. Sammy had one knee jammed into his back holding his good arm (she wasn't sadistic) behind and levered up as high as it would go without breaking. The floor was particularly unpleasant with all the shoes that had passed over it since the bar opened that day. It took the bar a moment to realize what happened and quiet down as they watched.

"Stevie Ray," the volume of her voice didn't change, though she did take on a chastising tone, "I understand you have some hard feelings, but perhaps you're letting the beer talk you into doing some stupid things. Now, you're a man who knows about choices, am I right? You can choose to continue this confrontation and maybe the sheriff will have to get involved, and then I'll have to do something I really don't want to do, or you can choose to let Jason buy you and your boys a round and you can go back to your game. What do you say?"

	Even Tech was shocked at the speed in which Fury had just dropped Stevie Ray. The other guys from the Road Crew suddenly seemed hesitant about intervening. "How about them beers, boys?" Tech asks, right as Sookie returns with a pistol. "Let him go, bitch, or I splatter your boyfriend all over the linoleum." she says with shaking hands. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"Listen to the gentleman, Sookie. Did I come in here name calling and tell you your name is stupid?" Sammy calmly removed the Glock from the holster inside her jacket and aimed it at Sookie's voice. "'Come meet Gran,' he says. 'Let's go have a beer,' he says. He should've said he was sorry I'd miss my workout in the morning and I'd get to beat up on low class, uneducated morons."

She pushed up a tiny bit on Stevie Ray's arm "It's your call, Stevie Ray. You want to have a drink on my boyfriend, or does the sheriff get to look at my I'd and gun permit while I take Sookie into SHIELD custody for attempted murder of a SHIELD agent?"

	Sookie doesn't move. "Bill Deerfield, /arrest/ these people! They're attackin' Stevie Ray and Ah'll be dammed if Landon gets away with hurtin' him again!" Sookie yells, cocking the gun. Tech is still sipping his drink when the gun is cocked.

"Sookie, my girlfriend is not joking with you. You could get the death penalty if you kill me. Murder with special circumstances. Then again...you might only get life in prison." Tech speculates, putting the glass down and keeping his eyes on Fury.

"Then again, you might get a decent lawyer like Sid Mike Langford and he could bargain it down to life in prison. Odds are you'd end up in Fort Leavenworth. Do you know who else is stayin' in Leavenworth now?" Tech asks.

Sookie's face pales. It appears she does.

"How long you reckon you'll survive if my animal of a brother catches wind of what you did? Ah don't much care for your chances, Sookie. Now...do we drink or do Ah die?"

After a long moment...Sookie hands over the gun to the Sheriff.

"Steve? A round for everyone, please." Tech says, getting up to go outside.

Sammy waited a minute longer before reholstering her Glock and easing up from Stevie Ray's prone body. Two steps back from the angry man, she reached into another pocket for a fold of leather to open in the sheriff's direction. Now that the immediate danger was passed, she turned her head to see Tech moving.

"Hon?" she asked, using the word for an inquiry, /are we leaving?/

	Sammy lagged a couple of steps behind, making sure no one followed them out. Outside, she caught up to him and took his hand. "She was ready to shoot me, Fury." Tech says after a moment, his fingers lacing with hers, because people would expect it.

"That's wasn't scary, though it should be. I always knew there we're people out there who were angry enough to take a shot at me, but no one ever has, so it was more of an abstract. If you hadn't been in that bar, I'm not sure anyone would have stood up for me, except Steve. He and I get along." Tech smiles mirthlessly.

Maybe it was the adrenaline or the idea people might be watching to see next, or both, that prompts Jason Landon's next action.

He pulls his "girlfriend" into a kiss to celebrate surviving, since he isn't getting his 'I survived' drink now, likely.

	Anything Sammy was about to say was lost in the unexpected kiss. When it ended, she smiled slowly, in no hurry to move away. Tech was good at things other than enhancing her weaponry. 	Tech smiles brightly, walking her to the car and holding her a.little.closer. He laughs at her question, mostly because he doesn't have the first clue at seducing a woman.
