Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

"I imagine they will, and we'll probably only want to slow them down. Not just them, either. I have a list." Sammy wondered if this was how Dad had started his files. Collecting information, drawing in people to work on bits and pieces, recording absolutely every scrap of information no matter how inane or unlikely.

"For now, I'd like to keep it inside the team. Of course, if the colonel, the deputy director, or Commander Dugan ask specific questions, I'm not encouraging you to lie. If there is any question about who gets this information outside the five of us, I'll make that decision."

"You provide me the information and the list and Ah'll get to work." Tech says. He's already looking forward to the challenge such work will provide him.

"So, the higher-ups get info if they ask and come to you before releasing it to anyone else. Check." Tech tells her.

"If you have information on the other teams we may work with, Ah'll work on those as well." Tech says, a thought now coming to mind in line with Fury's request.

However, he doesn't voice it because it will only be used in case of extreme emergencies.

"Refusing the head office will only get us both into trouble. With anyone else, the name Fury will make them pause."

She was almost to the bottom of the bowl and knew she shouldn't have any more. There had to be sleep at some point tonight.

That's the basic idea."

"You sure got to the bottom of the bowl pretty quick, Fury. You want more or you going to finally try to sleep off the excitement from earlier?" he asks.

He knew he might eventually, but his dreams would at least be very good.

She grinned at him and stretched lazily to work out the stiffness from being up late and inactive. "No more for me, thanks. I should get some rest. Your gran seems like the sort who'l be up early and not appreciate sleep-ins."

"Gran is an early riser, but she won't begrudge us a little relaxation, I don't think." Tech says. "But you go ahead and get that rest, Fury. I'll see you in the morning.

Sleep as well as you can." he says.

Sammy rose to rinse her dishes in the sink. "I imagine I'll sleep all right."

She paused by his chair. "Night, /babe/. Thanks for an interesting evening."

Tech lets his arm playful wind around her waist for a moment.

"Good night, /baby/. Dream sweet." he grins, letting her go.

Of course, as she leaves, he will watch her retreating backside.

He definitely broke the mold with /that/ one. Tech thinks to himself.

Sammy had to laugh as she left the kitchen. He had to be a dancer; he followed a joke as well as a cover story so easily. For the first time she had a inkling that if Tech wasn't so lab-oriented, he would do well in undercover work.

A light was left on at bedside, illuminating a turned down bed with plumped pillows and cozy looking quilts. Once dressed for bed in the long shirt she'd purchased, she climbed in between sheets soft with age and sighed as her eyes closed.

Something had happened, hadn't it? Some feeling or interest had kindled between her and Tech, or was she so far off base she couldn't see home plate anymore?

Whatever it was...it was nice.

At some point after Fury leaves, Tech sits up for a bit, thinking about several things long after his ice cream is gone. He almost has another bowl, but if he does, he won't sleep, Gran will kill him, and he'd miss out on whatever Fury had planned for tomorrow.

There was something about her that captured his attention, that was different from any other woman he'd ever met. She was so...unlike the type of person he thought he could see himself with, but they were friends, easily. More than that? He couldn't help but think of Jake's words.

She's an agent first and a person second, if at all. Keep your eyes open, Jason. S.H.I.E.L.D. will lock you up like a dog once they've taken what they want from you, if they don't kill you first. Your handler is going to be someone they think can control you.

Was Fury working him? Their earlier kiss didn't feel like it, but that was the sign of a good work. He remembered how well Agent Falconeri had worked him before they learned he was S.H.I.E.L.D.

They're gonna come at you sideways, Jason. Through Jess, through Gran, through your work.

"She's not like that." Tech tells himself as he gets up to rinse out his bowl.

"She's not like that." Jason Landon tells himself as he makes his way down the hall to his bedroom.

Whatever they had was good right now, but would it survive beyond a few days in the South? Or was Jake right, like usual?

He wished he knew.
