Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

She mulled that over with another few bites of chow mien.

"We handle it by leaving it alone. You're right, we'll be under closer scrutiny, so we let them believe that their plans are working. In the meantime, I'd like as comprehensive list of everything in those warehouses, including what each item was capable of doing. I'll get you more workspace. We continue working like we've been doing. The same rule applies: if the colonel, the deputy director, or Commander Dugan ask what you're doing, you tell them or refer them to me. Anybody else, you just send them to me. I'll cover your work, and you continue outfitting our team with the best equipment."

"I didn't say it was forever, just for now. The second I raise a fuss, they'll have you reassigned somewhere else. They gave you to me and I'm keeping you."

She put down her fork and began ticking off the relevant points. "There are three, probably four missing warehouse inventories, at least two mob families, a S.H.I.E.L.D. sting operation still in questionable status, and your grandmother and Jessica to consider. Somebody will get killed if we run amok without proper preparation. We need time and we're going to be watched for awhile."

Once again, Tech hadn't been thinking as far and deep ahead as Fury was. In that way, she reminded him of Jake; Jake always had a plan for everything, and always knew how to keep himself detached.

"Ah can't really refute your points based on that logic. Okay, Ah'll play it cool, Fury. Though...do you really think your parents would set you up like this and not tell you why? Ah guess it just seems...a little cold to do to you. A random agent, sure, but /you/...Ah guess Ah ain't thinkin' enough like a spy to get it." he says.

Sammy didn't consider it thinking like a spy, only using her reasoning skills to find a way out of the present trouble to get where she needed to be with everything and everyone she wanted with her.

"Do you realize how valuable you are? Seriously, you could write your own ticket anywhere, and S.H.I.E.L.D. has you. Up to this, I'm sure they believe they've set me up with somebody I'll find very useful down the line. WE blundered into the current situation. This couldn't have been predicted by anybody. Now we're going to have to take measures to preserve the working relationship we have."

"Well, no one can really change that workin' relationship but us, right? Ah mean, we work together and we don't stop unless we want to." Tech says.

"Ah always wanted to build stuff that helped people, kept 'em safe, and made life easier. Ah've gotten away from that goal, but Ah'm workin' my way back to it." he tells her, grabbing himself another beer.

"Should Ah assume that by 'blundered into the current situation' we also mean that kiss from the other night? Or how hard it is to keep mah eyes off you durin' any given moment in time?" he asks.

"Ah think you heard me, Fury." Tech says, bringing his beer back to the table to sit down.

"Look, Ah know we don't know each other, but that doesn't mean we can't work on fillin' in the blanks. What Ah wanna know, more than this plan, is if there's a chance that somethin' like that might happen? Ah kissed you the other day and you didn't exactly pull your gun and shoot me in dislike.

Ah might even say you kissed me back, even if we were just playin' a role." he says.

Sammy opened her mouth, then closed it. No jokes now. No winkwink /babe/ nudgenudge like the night before. He was serious, and he deserved a serious answer.

"We don't know each other," she agreed, "though we did get a crash course in the last twenty four hours. And yeah, I kissed you back. It felt good. I liked it." She licked her lips, recalling the sensation. It still felt good.

"There's always a chance. I want to be open to something or someone coming into my life."

"Fair enough, Fury." Tech says, remembering the kiss himself. It wasn't his first kiss, but it was definitely the best one he could remember. He takes another pull from his beer and relaxes a little.

"As long as there's a chance, Ah'll work to earn whatever Ah can get." Tech says. He wouldn't mind kissing her again right now, but he's got a million things rolling around in his brain right now, and the beer is going to tempt him to do something foolish before too long.

"So...Ah'll find out about Gran comin' home and then we'll figure out when we're leavin'?" he asks.

"Well, he said they can't really get a clear idea until she's awake so that they can run more tests. Of course, even if she does come home, she can't be alone. Ah'll need to find a way around that. Same for Jess." Tech says.

"If things take a little bit longer that expected, Ah understand if you don't wanna stay, or if you gotta go back. Don't want you to feel like you have to watch this play out." he says.

	Right. Yeah. "I understand it's a family thing." Sammy pushed food around on her plate. Her shoulders might have drooped a tiny bit. "You might call Personnel and ask about your medical benefits. 	Tech thought about those benefits and wondered if that would help. He'd planned to take care of Gran and Jessica's medical bills himself, but if S.H.I.E.L.D. would help at all, that would be great. The eyes and the smile were each potent on their own, but the combination was lethal. Northern women were not supposed to have this effect on Southern men. It was a rule or something, somewhere.

"Ah just wanted to test a theory of mine, and Ah'm sure it's correct. Ah don't know how any man can look at you and not get lost in those eyes of yours." he smiles in return. His hair is a little messy, but his smile is warm.

"Ah bet you get all the extra clips you want without even battin' an eyelash up on that helicarrier." he grins.

She laughed softly. He was laying it on thick and she didn't mind a bit. The legions of men who resisted her just fine were light years away from her thoughts.

She had the urge to brush the hair back from his forehead. Get a few drinks into the guy and he oozed charm like caramel syrup. It had to be the accent. "Are you angling to get me to do the dishes?" she teased.

He reaches out and places a hand near hers, toying with her fingers a little bit.

"Oh no. You are a guest in mah house, so doin' the dishes in outta the question." Techs says. "Ah /am/ anglin' for you to keep smilin' like you are right now, and maybe laugh again like you just did. Those are both things Ah could get used to hearin', even Ah gotta wait until no one's around." he smiles.

"Of course, if yah wanna do somethin' else after that, you're more'n welcome to." he says.

"I've been known to laugh and smile in public." She watched his fingers touch hers, finding comfort in the simple human touch. She couldn't remember the last time she touched anybody before the last few days. It had been something she avoided as much as she could manage. "You didn't exactly meet me at a good time in my life. That might have colored your opinion of me a little."

"Get a few drinks in you and you start propositioning unsuspecting women." She turned his hand over to rest palm up on the table. He had good hands. She'd known that when she watched him break down her favorite Glock.

She traced the seam between the fore and middle fingers. His hands were callused, satisfying an inherited expectation that dictated a man with soft hands had a soft head to match. "I promise I'll think about it. I don't actually sleep much as it is."

"Ah am sorry to hear that, Fury, but Ah can understand it in a way." Tech smiles. He visibly relaxes as she traces the seam of his hand. It's a nice feeling.

Eventually, he will study her hands and note that they've become well-adjusted to holding weapons. He will kiss each fingertip gently, followed by the palm of her hand, then provide the same treatment to the other.

After a bit of this, he'll let her hands go, and begin to clear the dishes from the table, unless she is still eating.
