Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

	Jason smiles and sighs as she gets into the passenger's seat. Sam is an amazing woman. He gets into the driver's seat and minutes later, they are back at the pond again. It was a lot different from their afternoon excursion. Being there at night made it seem clandestine in some way, like sneaking downstairs to see if Santa made it down the chimney after she'd watched him on the helicarrier having a smoke with Dad while agents watered the reindeer a few hours before.

"The only thing missing is...actually, nothing is missing. This is perfect." She squeezed his hand. "C'mon, lab boy. We're overdue for a cooling off."

	At the dock, Sammy let go long enough to sit down on the edge and dangle her feet in. She wasn't ready yet to lose the cool night air and the sensation of the breeze on her skin. "I'm a little envious of you," she said quietly. "Growing up here, a real family life. At least until Jake got you mixed up in the mob. A part of me would love having all this." "It had its moments, Sammy, but...there's a lot to be said for seein' most of the world before you're twenty. I'm twenty-four now and there's just so much I can't even begin to fathom. Sometimes, I think I've fallen behind all of my friends from school.

Every time I come home, someone's gettin' married, divorced or havin' another baby." Jason says, sitting down to kick his feet in the water.

"There's so much I've never done that most people my age have done in spades by now. I almost think I'm a Never-Bloomer." he chuckles.

Jason smiles at Sammy brightly. "You sure know how to make a guy feel good. I never really thought of all the stuff I've done in relation to the stuff I haven't.

I've lived an adventure myself...even if it wasn't a wholesome one." Jason agrees.

"The other stuff will come someday, or it won't. But I do have a life I can tell my kids about someday, too." he nods.

"Thanks, Sammy." he says, leaning over to kiss her shoulder.

If she follows his finger, she'll see his finger moving across the sky, following the path of a star that moves across the sky. "Look, a satellite." he says, no small amount of awe in his voice. Sammy tried to find a tactful way to ask a question she'd had since the incident and just decided to ask. If Jason hadn't figured out she wasn't the most tactful of people by now, he wasn't paying attention.

"Reyja is a beautiful female, but you worked overtime to keep her away. Why weren't you interested? I get why Jack and some of the others weren't. She didn't steal men belonging to ordinary women. But you are free to do what and whom you want. What kept you from taking what was offered? And why not see her now? There's no pressure, no enforced intimacy. She really did seem to like you."

Jason sighs, turning a little red at the question, mostly because of shame for the admission he was about to make.

"I thought you might have guess by now that I'm a virgin, Sammy. I have no sexual experience. Reyja wanted not only to have sex, but get /pregnant/ and...somethin' in me just can't abide by somethin' like that. She was a nice girl, after the fact, but she wanted somethin' I couldn't give to her." Jason says.

"Besides, I would never have seen that child again, and I know what it is to grow up without parents. I would never do that to a child of my own." he elaborates further. He takes a deep breath, then looks at Sammy.

"Chelsea, the girl I dated in high school, kissed and even made out, but when it came to sex...I couldn't do it. Not because she isn't desirable, but because I needed a deeper connection with someone before I could go that far. I wanted to find the right person instead of the person I'm with /right now/. She and I had so many issues that the no-sex thing was really just the nail in the coffin." Jason says.

"I told you I wasn't trying to have sex with you, Sammy, and now you know why. When I do find the right girl, I'd like it to be special, but I also don't wanna disappoint her by bein' inexperienced. I can't just invent a machine to teach the birds and the bees, though, now can I?" Jason chuckles.

She put a companionable arm around him and rested her head against his shoulder. It might've seemed like an odd conversation to be having here and now, but that was one of the things she liked about him.

"There's nothing wrong with wanting better for yourself and not settling for less. The inexperience won't be an issue, I think, if you find the right girl. Personally, I think you have too much to offer to worry about that."

	She nodded, head still against his shoulder. "Yes. With one person. I agree with you. It's not in me to use sex as a way to mark time. I'd like a connection to the other person." She laughed a bit.
