Endings and Beginnings
The Exiles, an old companion left behind, and a few new guests appear in the desert. Nearby, there's a small kitchenette - no walls, just counters, an oven, and a coffee maker. The smell of blueberry muffins wafts from the oven on the desert wind, along with fresh brewed coffee.

Just past the kitchenette is what appears to be a gradeschool classroom, tiny desks and blackboard included... and not much else, save for a slightly dumpy, balding man, waiting for them to get themselves in some kind of order.

That may take a few moments, as they appear not so much in the desert as twenty feet above it.

"Great. Asshole didn't get beat last time. Is there a cutscene we can skip and get the nitty gritty on how to beat this guy down?"

The Timebroker sighs.

"He is not currently a where, he's a when. Currently, he has either killed your parents, or otherwise undid your entire existence. Right now, you're only here as chronal memories of your timeline. Sort of like very, very irate shadows on the wall in the wake of the atomic bomb.

If that thought doesn't sober you, and you're not willing to sit down and listen, so you'll be of any use at all, I can send you back to continue wafting in the prevailing breeze."

Quinn knew the routine. He sat down at a desk with a pitcher of beer and a pint glass.

"Do as he says. We must bring balance to Fate. Many universes depend on what actions we take," comes the grave echoing voice of Doctor Fate.

It's mostly the Helmet in control right now. No one here knows the hand under the Helm anyways. Unless Cat is here. Only she might realize that this isn't 'really' Mark.

It's mostly Nabu doing the talking.

Michael sat down, although the whole "being written out of existence" thing pissed him the hell off. Stupid asshole time-travelling bullshit.

When everyone is settled in, the Timebroker regards them. "Appearing to kill Kang won't do it. He is preparing a confrontation. If you kill him before the moment everything is balanced on, anything and everything might de-stabilize.

All of you are here, because right now, you don't exist. You're free from the fetters of time... but important enough to your timeline that your 'shadow' cannot simply cease to exist while any hope of recovery remains.

If you die again, though, or fail, there's nothing I can do.

Kang is attempting to wipe out the world Petra, Dex, Michael and many others are from entirely, to cut ties to his world of origin. He wants to sever it from the timelines, make it immutable. For those who understand chronal physics at all, you'll know that would wipe out hundreds of timelines and worlds, and destabilize thousands more.

This world, and a close neighbor, have been unstable ever since Miss Rogers saved Anya Stark's life... when Sarah was not supposed to be in that world at all, save for an accident involving Galactus. Kang has been taking advantage of that.

Kill him in a possible timeline, it might just be a double, or a shadow, or him manipulating the situation... instead, you must focus your attention on saving as many situations as possible. The Tallus, the 'fancy bangle' attached to Miss Rogers' wrist will give you all the guidance that is possible without risking doing additional damage... too much information can be just as bad.

While you're playing good soldiers, and trying not to die, I will be trying to isolate one Kang in one place... if you save enough situations, and survive, you will have one chance, and only one chance to save thousands of worlds, your own included, and stabilize your local timeline, in a place Kang cannot retreat from.

Questions?"

"What he said." Petra grunts, drinking as much water as she can manage. She's going to need to be hydrated.

The Timebroker shakes his head to the question. "He has out and out written you out of existence. As of right now, he wins. I'm giving you one chance, and one chance only, to write yourself back in." he warns.

He gives them time to finish their food, and then, in a blink, they're somewhere else...
