A Chilly Fall Afternoon (open)
The Ides of October found Cait in the kitchen at Xavier's baking various types of cookies and even a few pies. The Ides weren't something they celebrated here in the States, but back home they still kept a few of the traditions alive by celebrating. The Ides of October were always her least favorite. The chariot race was always fun, but the slaughtering of the October Horse was not and Cait hated it.

This year instead of watching a horse get killed, she was in the kitchen baking.

"Yep," Corey says, with a tone that indicates that it's a little bit awesome.

"History and Environmental Science are going perfectly. Precalculus is a bit more of a problem, but I'm managing."

Cait nodded. "What about your English class?" she asked. Corey was the type to not tell a person everything unless directly asked.

"Mostly doing fine. Little bit of trouble keeping my essays on topic, but let's face it: Anne Bronte was twice the writer Emily was. Emily had more commercial success, but like that's a reason to study her books instead."

"Yes, but an essay on Anne was not what the teacher was looking for. You need to give them what they want, not what you want."

Little brother had focusing issues. Always had and probably always will.

"You need to try to remember to stay focused."

Indeed, Corey's 'I Can Focus' switch tended only to be triggered by the issues of 'Can I Sculpt It?' or 'Will It Advance the Causes of Reforestation and Sustainable Agriculture?' Otherwise...

"Yeah, I guess so."

It had been a great Anne Bronte essay, though.

"No guessing. You know you need to. Otherwise Mom and Dad will haul you back to Nova Roma if you don't keep your grades up," she chided.

Why did she feel like she was sounding like their mother?

The smell of baking led Misha from the front hall to the kitchen. He paused in the doorway long enough to hear Cait scold Corey. If the lure of cookies wasn't so strong, he would have left them to their discussion. If was the first appetite he'd had in days.

"Do the cookies come with a floor show?"

There's a begrudging nod, and then Ah, a Misha! "Trust us, you don't want to see the corresponding Festive Display."

"He's right. You don't want to see what we normally do on this day," she said and gave him a smile. "There's cookies and pie. You can have both if you want."

His attempt to smile should get good marks for intention. He like both Drake kids. "I'm a sucker for a good cookie."

"There's chocolate chip, chocolate chip pecan and peanut butter. Along with apple, cherry, and pumpkin pie."

"The apple's very good," Corey mutters between bites. He doesn't want to bring down the conversation with concern about Misha's being okay.

"Then I'll try the apple." He stepped around the baking area to get a plate from the cupboard. "And any cookie that makes it onto my plate."

"I'll get it for you," Cait said as she grabbed a plate from the cabinet. "Can't have Your Highness getting his own pie now can we?" she teased.

"You like to live dangerously, don't you?" Misha asked. His expression lifted a little at the familiar teasing.

"Of course I do. I'm a Drake," she grinned. "We live to play pranks."

She put a good sized slice of apple on the plate for him and added a few cookies. Misha had always been able to eat a lot for as long as she knew him.

"For Your Highness," she teased as she offered the plate.

He picked up the fork and shook it playfully at her. "Keep it up and I'll banish you to the kitchens to be my personal pastry chef."

He took a bite of the pie. It was luscious and cinnamon-y and living up to the aroma that led him in this direction. "I'm a patient prince. I'll let you practice until you get it right."

"Chili is man food," Misha said with as straight a face as he could manage. "Takes a man to make a good chili to compliment your beer."

Cait knew Corey was better at cooking, but she pwned him at baking. "Yes, you are better at cooking, but you still won't make garum for yourself."

She grabbed a few drops of water from the sink with her powers and flicked them in Misha's face.
