Defenders
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

Christmas Day is a Christian holiday, it's true, but it also has become increasingly secular. It is an opportunity for love, charity, and goodwill, even in Los Angeles, arguably the most superficial city in the country.

There is some debate within mystical circles if there is indeed such a creature as the embodiment of Christmas Giving known as Santa Claus. But whether or not there is such a being, the spirit of giving itself is very real, be it incarnated in a fat man in a red suit or not.

Throughout this small blue planet of Earth, people have brought trees into their homes, decorated them with lights and ornaments, and placed them in locations of honor. Stockings have been placed on the chimneys. And gifts have been placed under the tree.

Some are looking forward more to the receiving than the giving. But for many, it is the act of giving which warms them, which fills them with the holiday spirit.

Each person, in their own way, becomes a part of this spirit of giving. Each person, in their own way, becomes Santa Claus.

The Defenders Manor has been decked out with lights, as has most of the grounds. Ohu has made hanging lighting a top priority, and every tree on the grounds -- including the palm trees -- is well lit with multi-colored lights. Despite the warm location, Ohu has made sure that there's plenty of snow on the grounds, too, with a bit of magic. As for the gods themselves, and their mortal keepers...

Not really, she wanted to say. "Sure," she eventually said. A part of her blamed him for the situation. The offer was made to him and she had been included for being associated with him.

Business? Her? Not in a million years. She was a glorified babysitter for crying out loud. She could tell you about things from thousands of years ago, but not a bit about big business.

He sits on the chair and uncorks the mead. "What's up, Syd?"

She was so temped to go with a smart ass remark, but decided against it. "Right now? I'm enjoying a bottle of wine and booting a six year old back to bed when she sneaks out here. You?"

"Enjoying mead that actually will get me tipsy and thinking about Thor's offer." He sighs while pouring said mead into a glass. "As usual, I don't see how I get to turn this down."

"You could just say no," she said. She was quite tipsy already. Half a bottle of wine would do that to a person. A mere mortal person like herself.

He swirls the mead in his glass. "Then he gets someone else - like one of his kids - to do it." He sips the mead. "As much as I hate to admit it, he's right. I have business experience and can't die. Stark's company might need that."

"Doesn't this feel like you're betraying Mr. Stark? Or am I the only one who feels that way? Mr. Stark was nice enough to give me this job and for the first time since Zoey was born, I don't have to worry about money. I don't have to worry about having enough money for food and clothes for her. Or have to work two jobs just to make sure she has a roof over her head and food to eat."

He thinks about it. "In this room, yeah, you are. I know Tony. He's like Wiley E. Coyote. Someday, his clever plans are going to end. what happens then? Anya is smart, but she's young and all Tony has ever raised her to do is be mini-me." He sips more mead, trying to wash the sour taste out of his mouth. "Thor takes the long view on everything. He should have gone to Cap with this, but he didn't. He came to us."

"What gives Thor,a god, the right to meddle in the affairs of men? And don't say funding for the Avengers. All the funding does is give them a place to live and provide them with fancy toys. It does not make them, or the kids here, do what they do. With or without money and the toys they would stand up for what's right. The world would still have heroes."

He spreads his hands. "He can? Maybe he feels he has to." He looks at the walls and walks around the room. "Tony doesn't get how powerful he can be sometimes. He pulled the plug on the West Coast Avengers. His drinking almost destroyed everything before. Sure, having anya really mellowed him out, but..." He throws up his hands. 'It's more then just the money. It's what the Stark companies built. It's what they know and who they fund. It's about paychecks so starting metas won't be robbing armored cars to save their kids from cancer." He moves a hand through his hair. "I don't like it, but money counts."

She knew all about every cent counting. How many times did Syd only eat a few bites of food and let Zoey have the rest because she needed it more? Or counting change so she could afford a gallon of milk?

"You're going to do it," she said. It wasn't a question. "I'm still trying to figure out how I got dragged into it. I'm a historian and a glorified babysitter. That's it."

'You're better at this then you know."

"That's because this job is basically babysitting. Granted they're not kids and they're gods, but it's still babysitting. That I can do. What Thor is asking me to do? I can't do that. I don't know how to do that."

"Ms. Potts does a lot more than babysitting," Syd pointed out. She sighed and took a long drink from her wine glass. "Just what would all of this entail?"

"No doubt." He's going to pay for this. The mead is going to help any old time now. "But at least while we get screwed over in New York, I can show you the sites."

"And not in the good way," she said before she realize what she said. Yup, definitely had enough wine. She could feel the heat on her cheeks.

She cleared her throat. "Just out of curiosity, how many trips to New York will this require each year?" Syd had to think of Zoey first and no way in hell was she leaving Zoey alone with the kids for that long.

"Nope," he chuckles. "Not in the good way. So I might as well get you down to Rockfeller Center and Zoey into a snowball fight on the Avengers lawn. Maybe Steve can show her how to aim."

"Barton kid." He smiles. "His mom and dad are real characters. You'll love them. Overall, Steve's a good egg and a crack shot."

He sobers at the other question. "I have no idea, but if Thor wants any other favors, I'm going to lobby he makes it only as much as you can handle. Sometimes he needs to have that drilled into his head."

"I see. I'm sure Zoey will have a great time. I'm just thinking about Zoey in terms of these trips. I can't pull her out of school that much and goodness knows I am not leaving her here with the kids." There would be no buildings or anything left by the time they got back. She looked at the bottle of wine and contemplated another glass. Probably not a good idea since she was probably going to be up at the crack of dawn.

He looks at his empty glass and pours another. He then sits on the couch, takes Syd's feet and starts to rub them. "It's been nothing but hell for you here, huh?"

A shiver raced down her spine. She almost melted into the couch when he started giving her a foot rub.

"No. It's been challenging to say the least and I never know what's going to happen next, but it hasn't been hell. Yes, I've thought about quitting a few times, but that's before I was used to the insanity. Now I'm just another patient in the nuthouse."

She smiled. "It's like everything else in life with ups and downs. Good along with the bad."
