Masquerade Ball

WHO; The majority of the school.
WHEN; October 31, 1997
WHERE; The great hall and the gardens as well as the surrounding areas.
SUMMARY; Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch. Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King. This is Halloween. The Masquerade Ball.
RATING; R at the very most.
WARNINGS; The punch has been spiked with an Euphoria-inducing Elixir and a mild Babbling Beverage.
STATUS; In Progress.

The Great Hall was adored with the best that Charity Burbage could muster. Candles that would have usually kept the hall brightly lit were gone and replaced by pumpkins as well as a multitude of small white spheres of light that couldn’t be discerned as anything but stars from a distance. Despite the fact that the ceiling was overcast, nothing would stop the smile that Professor Burbage kept on her face. With a flick of her wand she placed the final touch on the decorations. She lowered a Jack-O-Lantern, on the center of the stage where the weird sisters would play, that was larger than her in her entirety.

With a quick shake to the Headmistress’ shoulders, she gave her yet another smile as she waved off Professor Hagrid who was attempting to bring more pumpkins into the room. They could go in the garden, after all.

“Would you kindly let the students in, Minerva?” the Headmistress shook her head disappointedly. She had been against this whole affair since the idea had popped into Charity’s head. But the simple fact that she was against the whole idea of it didn’t outweigh what her students had been through this past year. It would be for the best, they had earned this and more. Headmistress McGonagall gave a quick nod before heading towards the doors, a small breath, and then she opened them to find a group of masked students already gathered there, their eager faces reminding her why she had agreed to this in the first place.

With an honest smile, she raised her hands and projected her voice as Albus would have done if he were there, “Welcome, students, to the Masquerade Ball.”

mandy and whoever!

Even though Mandy didn't have a date to the ball, that wasn't going to let the girl down. She knew she could have a good time with or without a date. At least she hoped she would. Her dress was light pink and her mask a darker pink with lace and a few beads to make it stand out a bit more. It didn't cover her whole face, just around her eyes and the top of her nose.

Smiling happily, Mandy twirled a strand of dark brown hair between her fingers, a nervous habit that she's had for a whilem but stopped, not wanting to ruin her curled hair. She knew a few dances would be saved for her friends, until then, she'd walk around trying to guess who the other students under their masks were.

Evie was already irritated with her mask. Either she had charmed it wrong, or it was some spell in the Great Hall, because though she tried to wear it on her forehead for the time being, it kept snapping down rather painfully over her eyes. Apparently Burbage thought it very important for students not to know who was who. Then again, she was not the best in Charms and the mask’s lack of cooperation could have easily been her own fault. Sighing with defeat, she pushed the mask (black with peacock feathers) over her face.

I should have asked Justin to help with that too, she thought, though she was grateful he had rid most of the Snape-esque quality of her dress. It was simple enough, black with purple and green hues like the feathers on her mask.

As Evie stood in the Great Hall amidst couples and groups, she realized that not coming on her own would have saved her the awkwardness of the past ten minutes. As she scanned the room, she noticed a girl peering at other people as if trying to guess who was who. After a moment Evelyn recognized her and called over the music, “Mandy!”

She made her way over, smiling, rather relieved to find someone. “Dateless too? More fun this way, I’d like to think,” she said, and then added, “Your dress is gorgeous, by the way!”

"Evie!" Mandy called out grinning as she looked at her friend up and down, checking out her dress. "Your dress looks so good, I like it." Smiling as she looked around the Great Hall before turning back to her friend. "Thanks! Truth be told I've had it for ages and I've only wore it once. Yeah, I am dateless too." Adding that last part as she stood next to Evie.

"It is better this way, now we can just go up to any bloke we want and snag them away for a dance. More entertaining that way I think," she replied grinning back over to Evie.

Evelyn smirked inwardly at herself. Gorgeous? Really? Since when do you use that word, Evie? Apparently wearing a dress was having more of an affect on her than she knew. Either way, she was glad for Mandy’s company, even if it meant acting unusually girly. And these tights! Who the bloody hell thought of them? she thought irritably, trying to discreetly pull them further up her thighs as they again began to slip.

“Yeah, I think that the whole ball could be more interesting this way,” she said, following Mandy’s eyes around the strange masked figures. “Doesn’t it seem a bit weird, though? I feel like I’m supposed to recognize all of these people. There must be some extreme charming going on right now because I can hardly tell who anyone is—I think noticing you was just a lucky guess,” she added with a grin. “They could be anyone.”

An image flashed through her head—another result of her wild imagination—of a dazzling waltz with a stranger, with a sensual dip, and the fireworks…only to all come crashing down. “I mean what if we end up with somebody like Vincent Crabbe by the end of the night?” She fought to keep in a rather unladylike snort.

Mandy couldn't help but laugh. "Oh, that'd be easy." Grinning over to the girl. "We just stay away from big brutes that grunt. Besides, you know darn well he'd be over at the snack bar stuffing his face anyway." Laughing more Mandy looked back around.

"Good news for us though, they won't be able to recognize us so we won't get made fun of if we dance with someone like Crabbe."

Orla and Open

Originally having decided to go as a ladybug, Orla had changed her mind several days before in case no one else decided to dress-up in costume, opting instead to go for something more traditional. She had borrowed a clothes magazine from one of the girls in her dormitory and had ordered a green dress that had struck her fancy. It wasn't elaborate and far from being indecent. Instead, it was more playful and she absolutely loved the way the bottom of the dress turned when she did.

Stepping inside, she adjusted her mask not really liking the thing, but wearing it just the same since it was required. She glanced around, looking for anyone she knew, especially Thomas, but didn't see them yet. The wall on the far corner of the room was calling her attention - that or one of the tables, too, and she made her way over to the latter, sitting down and just watching everyone else.

Orla and Stewart and Open

Without much thought to it, Stewart had put his simple black mask on, and looked at himself in a mirror to make sure that he looked somewhat decent. He smiled when he thought about he really wasn’t as concerned about his appearance as his dormmates were. Ruffling his hair with his left hand, Stewart began to walk down to the Great Hall, wondering what exactly would happen that night. He couldn’t wait to dance with Dean as well as his friends that he’d promised a dance to.

Smiling to himself, Stewart started fumbling with his cufflinks and felt his face turn slightly red as he thought about how his brother had sent him dress robes. Feeling silly now for always thinking that Derek couldn’t care less about him, Stewart made a mental note to owl his brother tomorrow, as well as to plan to get him a great Christmas present.

Stewart shouldn’t have been in awe over how the Great Hall was decorated, after all it was Professor Burbage, but he was never-the-less. Not recognizing anyone in particular, he walked forward, the smile still on his face from the sight of the giant jack-o-lantern. Spotting someone who he was certain was Orla, Stewart walked over to the table where she was seated, making sure not to bother anyone who was standing or dancing.

“Orla?” Stewart questioned as he started to unconsciously move to the music. With a smile he sat down at the seat next to her, she was just as persistent as he was about not being able to dance, perhaps it was better to sit for the time being.

“Hey the Hall looks brilliant, doesn’t it? I knew Professor Burbage would go all out, and all the pumpkins!” somewhere along the line Stewart had remembered that he hadn’t introduced himself, it wasn’t too hard since his hair was a dead giveaway, but he turned toward Orla and put his arms on the table, “Oh yeah! It’s me, Stewart. You look amazing by the way, I really like your dress!”

The Great Hall was steadily filling up and was full with a vast array of colours and shimmering masks. Orla was wishing she had brought her camera. Even if she didn't photograph people, there were settings on the lens that could create different effects and would make it look better than still, posed photography. It'd look like a painting, like one of Degas' paintings of his ballerinas - a bit blurry and full of movement, but would still capture the essence nonetheless.

She was so caught up in her thoughts, that she hadn't even seen Stewart approaching. It wasn't until he said her name that she looked up at him, frowning at first as she tried to figure out who he was and then smiling when it dawned on her. Turning so she was facing him when he sat down, she nodded.

"There must be at least a hundred of them, if not more. But I really like how she decorated it; I was worried it would be full of all pomp and circumstance, but it's really very simple."

When he said who he was, she smiled. "I know it's you. I was able to tell by your hair," she teased lightly, her cheeks turning slightly red as he complimented her dress. Her fingers played with the fabric, intertwining in one of the layers. "Thank you. You clean up rather nicely too."

Shaking his head as he laughed, Stewart instinctively ran his fingers through his hair once more as Orla commented about it. And then turned slightly red when he heard about himself cleaning up nicely. Stewart readjusted himself so he was seated more comfortably before pretending to grimace and saying “Thanks! Professor Sprout made us get our hands dirty this morning anyway, I was worried I’d still have dirt on me or something, I had just enough time to get ready though.”

Looking around to see if he could spot Dean anywhere, Stewart began to hum as he tried to not worry. Dean would be there after all, he’d asked him to come to the Ball with him, he’d be there. No need to panic. Putting his attention back on Orla, Stewart made a serious face as he put his hand on hers, “Orla, I have a confession to make,” pausing he almost smiled at his overacting, “I’m a terrible dance.”

Stewart laughed slightly as he smiled once more, and then stood up, trying to encourage Orla to do the same “But you and I need to dance, okay? Come on if we both can’t handle it after a couple of seconds I promise we’ll come and sit down. But you look too nice to spend the night sitting at a table,” Stewart nodded once, holding out his hand.

Orla looked him over, particularly at his hands and smiled. "I don't see a single trace of dirt on you, so I think you're fine," she said lightly, glancing back at the crowd assembling. She had thought the teachers would have canceled at least the afternoon classes so everyone, the girls in particular, would have enough time to get ready. But they didn't and though she didn't do much beyond putting her dress and shoes on, and pulling her hair up, she felt sorry for the other girls and their scrambling about to get ready on time.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him looking around as if he were looking for someone. His date, most likely, and she smiled to herself. When he placed his hand over hers, she looked down at it and then up a him. "A confession?" she asked when he paused, raising her eyebrows curiously. But then she laughed, shaking her head. "That's your confession? And here I thought it would be something a bit more interesting. Especially, since you know I can't really dance either." He was silly sometimes, but that's why she liked him.

He stood and she looked up at him before biting her lip. He wanted her to dance? Part of her really wanted to say no, that she was perfectly comfortable where she was, and that they would both regret it later on if they did. But the earnest look on his face made her sigh and give in. "All right, but if I'm horrible or cause you to break something, don't say that I didn't warn you." With a bit of a sigh, she stood and took his hand, hoping and praying that she didn't do anything to embarrass herself.

After their short walk prior to actually attending the ball, Hermione and Ron had finally arrived. Though they had been holding hands earlier, much to Hermione's shock and surprise, they were forced to let go once they were there in order to tie and charm their masks on.

Stepping inside, she looked around the Great Hall and smiled at the decorations. Professor Burbage had done a wonderful job on them and it looked really festive inside. Already, people were clambering inside and Hermione walked further in so she wouldn't take up most of the entrance. Her eyes looked around the room, searching for Harry and Ginny. "Do you see them?" she asked and then realised she didn't elaborate and say who. "Harry and Ginny," she added, looking up at Ron.

Ron took in the Great Hall, scanning the room and thinking that the professors had done a pretty good job with it. He spotted the stage and was looking forward to hearing the Weird Sisters play. Plus, dancing with Hermione would definitely be better than sitting around and watching everyone else dance.

"Er, no, don't see 'em." He said, scanning the room for black and red hair. "Probably not here yet." He said, shrugging and looking around again. He was looking forward to the food as well. It was always good at these things. He was not, however, going to drink the punch as he'd heard rumours it was spiked.

"Neither do I," Hermione said, glancing around the Great Hall once more just to be certain. She saw neither a full head of dark hair nor the famous Weasley red either. Therefore, she assumed they were still doing whatever it was they had planned to do before the ball.

Gesturing towards one of the tables, she glanced up at Ron, finding it always awkward to not fully see his face though able to make out his eyes underneath his mask. "We should probably get a table to reserve for all of us," she suggested, shrugging her shoulders.

"Right, yeah. 'S'good idea." Ron said, agreeing and looking over the various tables set up in the Great Hall. Some were scattered with students and some empty and when Ron spotted one that was both near the stage and the dancefloor, he thought it was perfect. "How 'bout that one, yeah? Good spot." Lifting his hand he pointed at the table he was looking at and then looked at Hermione.

She was wearing her mask of course and he couldn't see most of her face but the fact that he could only see her eyes made them all the more bright and sparkling. She had very pretty eyes, he'd discovered that ages ago and now he knew, all night, he'd be trying not to stare into them.

Hermione followed his outstretched hand when he pointed to a table and nodded. Personally, she would have preferred to have been a bit farther away from the stage, but was willing to compromise. "We should get it before someone else does," she said, started to weave her way through the crowd to the table he had chosen. Sitting down, she looked at the decorations on the table and then around the Great Hall again. "I wouldn't have admitted this earlier, but I'm actually relieved that Professor Burbage took control of the decorations instead of leaving it for the prefects."

Dean found the whole mask thing kind of silly and hard considering his glasses. He was wearing this green mask over top of his glasses and he thought he looked quite silly. He ended up putting on the mask and his glasses over top. Dean thought he looked like a fool especially in these dress robes but figured he had to show up for Stewart. Dean didn’t care what he looked like because he would see Stewart and get to dance with him.

Finally he made his entrance into the Great Hall that admittedly looked fantastic. He scratched his head which lacked his beanie, just for Stewart. His hair was a mess but he had no reason to fret he just felt lost without his hat. So perhaps Morag had been right he was a bit depended on it? What ever it didn’t matter now he was more focused on finding Stewart. He looked around spotting him on the dance floor with Orla and just decided to wait till he was done or noticed him. He stood to the side of the dance floor and tapped his foot to the beat of the music.

Paisley was of course excited about the ball. It was always fun for the girl to dress up and especially in masks. She actually had a collection of them back home, which came in very handy considering they had to wear masks to the ball.

Her dress was white, light and it came down to her knees and flared out a bit so it'd be easier to twirl around in. Her mask was also white, with light blue beads on it to match the see-through light blue pair of wings that she decided to put on her dress for the fun of it.

Walking in the Great Hall, Paisley looked around and couldn't help but smile. The girl loved dances and dressing up made it more interesting. Paisley did like to live out her fairy tale type dreams.

Justin Finch-Fletchley | Susan Bones | and you.
[info]condign
2008-02-13 08:25 am UTC (link)
The evening had been going relatively well. Susan Bones looked brilliant and Justin Finch-Fletchley hoped he managed to emphasize her elegance. His dress robes were relatively expensive and tailored to fit, accentuating his form to the best of the fabrics ability. He wore a yellow handkerchief in his breast pocket neatly folded to precision, a tie to match, and a decently crafted mask that he'd tweaked to his liking.

Trivial packaging aside, Justin was certainly enjoying himself this evening. He'd made his rounds to most of his friends and their dates and had even entertained Susan on the dance floor twice. There hadn't been any vomit, and the awkwardness had been thwarted early on during the initial "pick up" business in the common room.

He'd made a point to make the evening as sociable as he could. It was funny how things worked themselves under the facade of a "ball". Though Justin mingled with majority of those present throughout the week and in between classes the ability and willingness to let go of trivial inhibitions and other such jarring social behaviors seemed to encourage a more entertaining joy. For obvious reason Justin had promised himself not to let the stresses of schoolwork, apprenticeships, and other such things bother him tonight.

Tonight....was meant to be enjoyed. And that he was making sure of.

With a hearty chuckle he lead Susan off the dance floor by hand and back to the table they'd claimed as their own. From the looks of it everyone else who’d been in their group seemed to have scurried off to tend to their own dates. After dazzling the masses with his half-arsed and almost dangerous swing dancing skill he needed to sit and catch his breath. Placing his mask on the table he pulled out a chair for Susan and smiled, "Why didn't you ever tell me you were so great at the swing? That was bloody brilliant!"

The evening had started on a normal awkward level, but as the night progressed Susan’s fear of vomiting lifted and she just started to have fun. She felt pretty in her yellow dress, and yellow mask feeling as if she was suitably ready dressed for the evening. She was having a ball and she would admit it, even falling criminal to the awful unintentional or intentional pun. Susan was just going with the flow and keeping up the good spirits and trying not to think about what if. So what if Justin and she remained friends after this, she was giving it the good ‘college’ try.

As he escorted her off the dance floor she panted a little as she caught her breath. Fanning herself Susan smiled at Justin as she lipped off her yellow mask and took a seat as he pulled out her chair. “Thanks Justin,” she said before grinning big at his next comments. “Well you never asked Justin, granted when or how would this come up in conversation.” She felt like she was glowing, and she probably was. Susan was having fun, her knee didn’t hurt anymore and she was genuinely happy.

Draco & Pansy & open!
[info]pansyesque

Nervous?

Not particularly. Pansy had a flair for preparation, and after a good two and a half hours of nitpicking in front of a mirror, she’d come to the conclusion quite confidently that she had nothing to fret over. While she hadn't been able to decide on the dress her mother had bought for her, Mrs. Parkinson had good taste-- even if she did go with purple satin as opposed to the pink chiffon Pansy had requested. Still, thin-strapped, square-collared and rather gloriously ruffled in the skirt, the garment was very pretty in a delightfully feminine way. And expensive. Thus, adequate.

It was easy to identify Pansy by her laughter-- high-pitched, gratingly so at times, but always cheerful-- the silver and black coils that made up her mask didn’t disguise her much, but shaped as it was, into an excessively cruel expression, it probably wasn’t supposed to be difficult in the first place.

“... no, Blaise thought it’d be much worse,” she was in the middle of saying when a fresh bout of laughter took her-- she haughtily suppressed the greater volume of it with the palm of one raised hand. Having been temporarily separated from Draco, her date as a matter of course, Pansy had taken a moment to briefly see to her friends as he, she supposed, dealt with his. They laughed along with her, a small troop at a corner of the Great Hall that, quite clearly, members of other houses seemed to avoid approaching. Every now and then, she’d glance over her shoulder and see if he was on his way back, but when she couldn’t spot him out in the crowd nearby, the conversation would begin anew between herself and the other well-dressed Slytherin girls in her company.

“Where do you think he is, Pansy?” asked one rather fetching Naomi Rowley, in a fetching orange gown. “I thought we’d have seen him by now.”

It was unclear as to whether the inquiry was about her date or Blaise Zabini or some other fellow; but nevertheless, Pansy’s answer was a chirpy thing, “If he has any wits, he’d be on the pitch practising; he will surely need all the help he can get for the game tomorrow. Idiot.”

Oh, Potter. Always good for a giggle.

Theodore took the shortest time, and perhaps exerted the smallest effort in preparing for the Ball. He was not the biggest fan of such occasions for a fact unlike most of the Hogwarts populace, for he sees not the purpose of it. Taking two long stemmed roses from his bed, he took one last look at his reflection. His robes, made of the richest dark fabrics, were cut perfectly to his proportions, and his intricately designed mask was already in place, concealing the upper half of his features. He was... appropriately-dressed, and that was all that mattered.

It only took him minutes to reach the Great Hall. Instantly, the crowded room made his claustrophobic. Despite his personal objections, he crossed the packed room, and searched for his 'date'. When his search had been unsuccessful after a few minutes, he had already decided to retreat to the less crowded part of the Hall when a very distinct sound made him turn.

He spotted a woman, with stunning robes and lush dark hair a little away from him. A smirk grazed his features. Slowly, he neared her, testing the waters, but the next laugh that escaped the other's lips finally confirmed his suspicions. "You know..." Theo started as he stopped just behind the girl, his hands on his back. "If you would not exert even the smallest ounce of effort in concealing, or even disguising such a distinct laugh, it completely defeats the purpose of wearing a mask in the first place..."

You know...?

Having instantly recognised this voice— or at the very least, gotten a pretty good idea as to who this person may have been-- Pansy’s chin took on a sardonic side-ways tilt, and her mouth stubbornly pinched at either corner, suppressing the sarcastic counter that’d have no doubt come to mind immediately. As if under sufferance, the Slytherin girl took her merry time in turning around to face Theodore; and once she had, as if offended by his words, she lent him a cold look and a good minute and a half of unwelcoming silence. “Being that the single prerequisite of being here is that one is decorated with a mask, Theodore, I would say that the purpose of wearing this--“ she gestured self-righteous toward her mask with a pointed finger-- “is hardly defeated. Oh, pardon, I hardly mean to cause a fuss in calling your error, I suppose I could try changing the way I laugh to please you. I’ll mimic you, shall I?— Yes, then no one will know it’s me. Hold on a tick.”

Pansy cleared her throat behind one raised fist-- and then, exuberantly, she went about lowering her voice as much as she could and letting out a very ridiculous, very wry, “Huh-huh-huh-har-har-har,” as if to sharply mock Theodore’s own laughter. It could have been a very patronizing moment between either Slytherin, if Pansy’s awful, monotonous laugh had sounded anything like Theodore’s. Purposefully, it hadn’t.

“Better, then?” She paused as if to gage his gage his expression, seeming rather pleased with her efforts-- before letting out a far more genuine, far more high-pitched chuckle at it all. Shaking her head, and now stepping away from that subject to be able to take note of the boy’s clothing, Pansy glanced at the various garments and eventually tipped her chin downward in a half-approving nod. “Well, you don't look awful, Theodore-- dark palettes always go down well, I see. Wasn’t Daphne supposed to arrive with you?”

"You do realize that you've just embarrassed yourself more than once in less that two minutes?" Theo remarked after he had to bear watching Pansy's painful imitation of his laugh. He doesn't even laugh, for Merlin's sake. A small smile then followed Pansy's words. "If your purpose was to mock me, I'd have to say you've failed miserably. Safe to say, no, you've made things much worse. I do, however have something in mind to remedy things..." He took one of the long-stemmed red roses from his back and offered it to the woman in front of him with a curt, polite nod.

"Why, thank you." He said, straightening. "You don't look too horrendous yourself. I can't say the same about other people though..." he said his eyes following the little alarmingly purple pixie that passed him. "No, she wasn't. I was told that we shall meet here. And where's your man? Off to his other dates?" a small, teasing smile.

Pansy, embarrassing herself?

The girl’s arms crossed and her eyes gave a second, incredibly dramatic roll-- as if the very idea was preposterous. “Stop your exaggerating, Theodore, I was not mocking you all that loud,” came her dry response, articulated by a dainty, but very scornful, shrug of her shoulders. “And to begin with, it is hardly embarrassing to not hide one’s laugh in the first place. A person looks even more like a bloody idiot if they’re walking around in a mask, trying to hide the way they laugh for no reason. I clearly do not care if I am recognised.” Her impassionate rant having been concluded, the Slytherin let her chin take on a haughty angle as she happened to glance downward and spot Theodore’s rose. Neither overtly surprised or flattered, Pansy released another good-humoured laugh as she reached out and took the pretty gift from him.

“You are ridiculous-- been picking through the gardens again?” she said, mid-chuckle, but it wasn’t necessarily posed as an insult to her friend, despite the fact that her voice always had a way of pronouncing words sharper than she sometimes intended. But a moment later, Pansy gave a more simple-spoken, and more genuine, “Thank you.”

Ah, and then there was Theodore’s latter question regarding Draco’s whereabouts. Her lips stretched into a smirk; it downplayed the parts of her that may have been sincerely jolted by such a horrible idea. “His other dates. Aren’t you clever.” Using his rose, Pansy gestured outward, toward the greater expanse of the Great Hall. “Yes, he is out there somewhere-- probably an issue with Crabbe or Goyle, I expect, they still rely very much on his better judgement.”
