Plan B
"This is humiliating!" Vishin shrieked at Draconia, although still outside of arm's reach from the bars of her cell. "We've lost nearly every candidate to this surface dweller's genetically-aberrant tricks, and Lord Kerouac would already have faced him if he weren't otherwise engaged at present. Our only saving grace is that they've all been too shamed to reveal you as their patron.

Still.... we have Kerouac. His house is the highest ranked of any of the candidates, but still..." He fixes his gaze on Draconia, stroking his beard to calm himself. "..He has an unfortunate habit of insisting on fair fights. I will not risk our pl-- I will not risk the future of the Atlantean ruling family on fair odds."

Draconia frowned, resisting the urge to try and reach out and tear Vishin's head from his foolish shoulders.

"Then, of course, our answer is simple. Kerouac need never know we tip the odds in his favor."

"What do you have in mind, Draconia?" Vishin arches an eyebrow cautiously. "Our hands in this haven't been revealed yet, and I would prefer to keep it that way."

Vishin thinks over what he knows of Jeffries' family.

"They're aberrants themselves, and not inconsiderable ones, especially for Canadians... it will take a notably skilled team to deal with them, I won't be able to move them as quietly as I'd like."

He fixes her with a gaze. "You're certain Lord Kerouac can put this to an end with our aid?"

An Atlantean messenger arrives at the Alpha Flight headquarters, carrying two sealed envelopes.

"I have been sent to deliver a message to the son of.." He checks his assignment info. "Madison and Lillian Jeffries."

Jordan figures that probably means Mason, but his brother has enough on his plate right now with Atlantis stuff.

"Yeah, that's me." Technically true.

The messenger departed as soon as he'd delivered the envelopes.

The first one is pinned shut with a piece of coral that shatters when pressed upon. In the usual overtones of condescension of nobility, it announces that Lord Kerouac of the third house of Atlantis extends a formal invitation to Princess Marrina, as well as Mason Jeffries "and his lackeys", to meet him for honorably armed single combat before the king and courts of Atlantis. Safe passage is guaranteed for all involved. A death waiver, already signed by Kerouac, is also included. More bluster and ceremony, but still pretty much just a challenge like the others.

The second envelope is an entirely different story.

We have your parents, the humans Madison and Lillian Jeffries. They will be killed if you do not throw the fight against Lord Kerouac. Your defeat must be presented believably. Tell anyone of this, and they will die.

It's type-written, with no discernible scent or markings beyond that of the messenger who carried it. Two sections of hair, one a mix of gray and black, the other chestnut brown, are included; along with a photo of the two unconscious in their living room back in Kitchener.

"They want Mason to throw the fight, which would mean his death, and they're holding our parents against his surrender."

Mel is horrified. She thinks. "Doesn't have to be his death, does it? Nobody's died yet. But that's... completely out of line, going after your parents."

"No, but you know that's what they'll go for. They don't want any threat to their royal succession. Which is why we're not going to tell Mason, and the rest of us are going to deal with the captive situation."

Mason will be found in the Temple, taking some much needed down-time with his girlfriend. They had a romantic comedy marathon going, Mason making his usual impersonation of a bottomless pit when it came to popcorn and pizza bites.

"Can't." Jordan explains. "Its at the same time as proceedings regarding issuing a formal complaint from Canada to Atlantis over all of this, and they want me to be there to explain, yet again, why exactly Atlantis thinks that its ok for their royalty to interfere with Canadian citizens like this. I'm not sure Atlantis cares, but considering the past interactions, Canada was one of the few nations sort of friendly with them... I think they've pretty much blown that, at least til someone new takes over."

Mason cringes. "I... I see."

He sits up, rubbing the back of his head, clearly feeling guilty about apparently bringing Canadian-Atlantean relations into a tailspin. "So... boy, this is a big thing... I... I mean this has really been a pain, but it doesn't need to turn into a crisis."

He's not about to tell his older brother, who has a better head for these kind of political situations anyway, not to do it though.
