He shook his head, wordlessly. He honestly didn't know what to think, sometimes he wishes the wheels in his head would just stop turning for five minutes so he could sit there, blandly thinking nothing at all. He hoped for the best but there was always that nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach that something terrible was going to happen.
He took a deep breath and felt and heard his own stomach gurgle. When he thought about it, he couldn't really remember the last time he ate. "Good thing you brought those cookies," he said reaching over a snagging a few off the plate. He ate them unceremoniously and offered one to Janis. "These are really good," he said in between bites of the sugary confection.
Janis only took one, her expression mimicking his in it's sobriety. She made her way over to sit on his bed as she nibbled on the cookie. "Has like, your Dad gone to the police or anything yet? Get some search dogs or something?"
All of Janis' experience with the lost and found came from television shows and Nancy Drew (yes, she did read TYVM). "Maybe the school already has them looking."
He nodded, his mouth still full of cookie when she asked about his dad. Swallowing he plunked down on the bed next to her and sighed deeply. "He hasn't gone home yet," Apple said. "But he told me to sit tight while we waited to hear back."
"We've got muggle authorities looking for her downtown and we've talked to the school. Apparently she's not the only one missing," he was glumly.
"Well that kind of has to be a good thing, right? I mean." She paused. "That just means more people are looking. Right?"
Janis sighed, wrapped an arm around Apple's shoulder and squeezed him before she spoke again. "Maybe she tripped and lost her memory and now a bunch of nuns are taking care of her? And they're singing like the Sound of Music?"
"Yeah, hopefully they'll find her soon." He let his head drop onto her shoulder when she wrapped an arm around him and he laughed gently at her suggestion. "Yeah, maybe that's what happened," he grinned. "Though they're in for a real treat, mom can carry a tune as well as a duck can."
"Well that explains everything then." Janis surmised, and as she spoke, she wrapped both arms around her boyfriend, squeezing him tight. "The bump on her head gave her the super-ability to sing too! That's why no one has recognized her yet." She nodded to herself, and added after a moment, "Just you wait Apple. They'll find her and only good things will have happened."
He couldn't help but laugh, it was nice to be able to do that for once no matter how bleak it looked. He had always loved that about her, the cheerful, positive attitude. She had been making it easier since his mom disappeared just by being around. It was hard not to see the silver lining with Janis around.
In between bits of his giggling he incidentally let it slip. "I love you Jan Jan," when he heard himself say it, he stopped laughing, he could feel his face warming. "You just... you make things easier," he nuzzled her a little, closing his eyes. "I bet you're right. Singing nuns and all."
Janis turned equally pink when the big four letter word was dropped, from the tips of her hair-covered ears to the tops of her cheeks. "Of course I'm right. I'm a girl."
It was a complicated fact that Janis owned over three dozen shades of lip-gloss and chap stick. Today's was pina-colada, and when he laid his head down, she pressed a kiss right to the middle of his forehead.
His grin spread. "Yeah, I know," the smell of pina-colada made his head a little swimmy. "You wanna light up?" he asked, wrapping his arm around her waist.
"Do you? We already got the muchies prepared..." Janis paused in her train of thought, derailed it and caused several conductors to figure out what was going on. When she spoke again, her eyebrows were knitted together.
"Lucky butt!" Janis grinned. It was better when they were smiling, life was too young to be as serious as they were having to be. She shoved him playfully with one arm, "I had to tell Mom that we were just really serious study buddies." She rolled her eyes, "I'm just waiting for Gael or Leon to tell her otherwise. Then she'll turn purple or something."
"Yeah," he grinned, mischief in his eyes as he briefly forgot the severity of the situation. "Super serious study buddies," he laughed before bending to give her a kiss on the lips.
He straightened up a little and went over to his desk to collect a joint. He made sure there was a towel shoved up against his door and the window was open before lighting up. He took a drag and passed it on to Janis. While letting the smoke out he looked at her seriously. "Should I... like talk to those guys? Leon and Gael, I mean," he said leaning against the window sill. "I mean... maybe they just need to hear me say that I have... like... chivalry and shit."
Janis was giggling before she ever took the joint from Apple, drawing her legs up underneath her as she took the hit. Really, the girl lived on a natural high as is. "You mean that you're not taking advantage of me every chance you get?" She grinned. "I don't know, they're kind of creepy protective."
She paused before speaking, screwing her face up in thought; "Once, I'm pretty sure they knocked a boy over in the sandbox because I tripped over his castle and he got mad."
He practically bounced across the room and landed on his bed next to her. "Exactly," he said giving her a kiss on the cheek.
His eyes got a little wide when she told him the story about the boy and the sandbox. "Do you think they're going to tip me over in the sandbox?" he asked with a goofy grin, sneaking the joint back for another hit.
"I don't know, they're not as tall as they used to be...." Janis giggled before she tipped backwards on the bed. Even if his mother wasn't in the front of her mind and thoughts, she was still riding in the back of Janis's head, an ever present threat against their smiles. What if she wasn't found? What if they had to get all serious? What if she had to wear black? What if- "I bet you could take them!"
"Give them the ol' one-two and show them what's what?" She added, punching the air as if to finalize the point.
Apple laughed and leaned back on one of his palms. "I probably could, maybe not at the same time though," he grinned. "But you know me babe, I'm a lover not a fighter. I'd do it for your honor though, right?" he leaned over and kissed his cheek again.
Janis blushed a little and nodded, turning her face to kiss his once again "That's why I love you." Oh yeah, They just went all the way with the double L double down. KFC had nothing on them.
"Maybe take a peace pipe and some of my cookies when you do? They'd never fight someone with cookies."
He grinned when he heard her say the L word too. They were on a roll tonight!
"That's a good idea, you can never be too cautious and of course cookies and pipes always solve disputes," he smirked. "I think I might need a little more help with the sullen one though," he laughed.
"Just punch him in the nose and call him a dunderhead. It always works for me!" Janis giggled, "It helps that it's true."
She scooted on the bed again, so as to sit closer still and bit into another cookie, speaking around the crumbs. "They can be really nice though. Both of them."
