Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

	The question made Sammy wonder if Tech had told Mrs. Landon who he worked for now. "You could say I was born to it. It's sort of a family legacy. This coffee is wonderful. Jason has been known to speculate if my blood is three-two coffee." (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"I'm aware of who your father is and that S.H.I.E.L.D. is sponsored by the United Nations. I did some research on your website once Jason told me that he was going to be working with you. I'm very glad that he is doing research and development and not working with people who could possibly get him killed regularly." Evelyn says.

"I also know that he's working with you all to help Jacob get released early. I am ashamed to admit this to anyone, but I wish Jason wouldn't do it. He needs to be free of his brother's influence. Jake used to be a good, sweet young man, but...after his ability started, he changed. He fell in with that Michael Savoy not long after and that was when the rumors started." Eve says.

"Admittedly, our website only shows our company manners," Sammy said with frank honesty. Mrs. Landon obviously knew more than Tech gave her credit for. They were protecting each other. It was admirable. She had to be careful not to screw up any cover story he might have told his grandmother about his injuries.

And it was not the time to tell her than working with her team could very well get Tech killed. It was a choice Tech had made, and Sammy would not gainsay him. Yet.

"Ultimately, the decision to provide an early release for Jacob will rest on the government," Sammy said carefully. "All of Jason's work will only go so far. The rest is on Jacob."

	Evelyn laughs, merry little sound. "With most men, the way to their heart is through their stomach. His is through his brain." Evelyn says, still laughing a little. "I know my grandson, Sam, and he holds you in high regard. I can tell in the way he speaks to you. I've only seen him defer to him like that with two other people." Evelyn says. 	"Ma'am, I think it's as simple as Jason needing someone to be in charge. He made his deal, but then he was on his own. I made him another deal, and he's not alone now. Oh, youth is wasted on the young.

She listens to Sam give reason after reason as to why Jason wouldn't be interested in her and Evelyn has to stifle a smile. If she had to bet money, she'd bet that Sam Fury held Jason in good regard, too.

"He does respond to structure. He, Jacob and their grandfather had their daily routines. They took it hard when he passed on, but I think Jason took it the hardest of the two, since they connected over their love of machines and gadgets." she says.

"My husband built several of the appliances in this kitchen, and Jason keeps them in working order, though he tends to over-fix them at times. Don't let him near your coffee pot if you want coffee at regular time each day." she chuckles.

Sammy was relieved at the change in subject and it showed. She didn't do well on personal topics anyway, and while she liked Tech and had a lot of respect for his talent, she'd known him for about five minutes. Mrs. Landon was taking leaps in questionable logic to get an outcome that was highly unlikely.

"We've already had the discussion about interrupting my coffee source. I require it at all hours of the day and night. He's allowed to improve my guns, not my espresso machine."

	"I have lots of practice dealing with stubborn people." She almost said it was her job to help him, but it would lead to a discussion on how much she and Tech had in common when it came to older brothers, and she didn't want to talk about it. "Indeed it is, Sam, even if some people have no respect for such things." Evelyn says.

"I've had offers to sell for nearly three time what this land is worth, but I refuse to take them. I want my boys to know that they have a home to come back to, no matter how far away they roam. I'd like them to have their own families live here, and give their children that same peace and comfort." she says, smiling at Sam.

"My great-grandmother told me that there's been a Landon on this land nearly as long as there have been Landons. Lord willing, there always will be." she finishes, offering to refill Sam's cup.

"All families need /something/ to bind them together and history does that, Sam. For some it's land, others it's service or tradition. But it's important that each generation /know/ that history so as not to forget it." Evelyn says, finishing with the pouring and refilling her own just a bit.

"I'm under no illusions; I'm getting older, and I don't know how much time I have left. None of us do. But I intend to make sure that Jason, Jacob, Jessica and that baby she's carrying all have a home to come back to when they get my age." she says.

"If I can do that, then I consider my life as having been fulfilled." she finishes.

"No /wonder/ you're all skin and bones, child. Takeout does not a proper meal make! Jason suffers from the same delusion. Well, I'm just going to have to set you two straight on a few things, starting tomorrow morning." Evelyn says.

"I hope you brought an appetite, Sam, because you're going to have to go home and tell your parents why you've gained a pound or two. Perhaps my grandson's luck in the kitchen will even improve and he'll cook for you all from time to time." she says, though she sounds less convinced of that particular statement.

	Sammy looked down at herself. Skin and bones? Well, she hadn't had much of an appetite since Qamar... But she didn't avoid food. She could always eat. And there was always coffee with cream and sugar. Those were calories. She should introduce Mrs. Landon to Jarvis. "Jason bragged about your cooking all the way here from lunch." Evelyn smiles, noting some similarities between this girl and her grandson.

"Waffles it is." she says, noting the items she'd need for tomorrow morning in her mind. Of course, she had them all, and if she was missing something, she'd send Jason out for it in the morning before Sam was up.

"Well, Sam, it's been great talking to you, but this old lady needs to get to bed. Will you tell Jason to lock up if you seem him before you turn in, please?" she asks.
