Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

"Just pulling some of the goodies out of the fire and saving them for us." She tried her best 'but I'm cute!' look. And failed. She always did when she was thinking tactically. "If S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't know about the cache, we just need to keep Savoy out of it until we can get it moved. We'll have to do it as a full team or with a group we can trust. S.H.I.E.L.D. has plenty of holes they've forgotten about. I said I'd get you lab space for your inventions that haven't been evaluated yet, so we'll make it a LOT of lab space with extra storage."

"Ah like this idea, Sam. It's no trouble for me to change the access codes at at all. Savoy shouldn't know about it, but on the off-chance he does, we'll keep him out." Jason says. He grins as she does the looking cute bit and feels that she succeeds on a different level than she's thinking.

"All in all, Ah think at least that cache of things will remain safe until further notice." Jason tells her.

"Well, it's still early yet. We can hang out here, though Ah wish Ah'd thought to bring food. Some of my favorite times were just layin' or sittin' out here in the sun or playing on the swing.

In fact, you haven't tried the swing! Can't leave before you've done that. How about you get on and Ah'll push?" Jason suggests, standing up. He could definitely use another soak in the water, but he's glad she likes it here.

"We'll come back again anytime you want, Sam. Just say the word."

	"You better not overdo it." Sammy paused to look at the damp bandages they'd have to change back at the house. She tried to smooth an edge in vain. "I couldn't face your grandmother if you re-injured yourself. The rumors she'll let pass, but that? Not a chance." She went to the swing to climb on and hang tight to it. "She thinks you're pretty awesome as well." Jason says, having no idea of the conversations that Gran has had with Sam. Otherwise, he'd die of sheer mortification.

When Sam is ready, Jason pushes her on the swing, giving her a couple of good pushes and standing back.

"You know, Ah wish that Egyptian Coffee Shop had caught on around here. They have some great coffee and tea you might have liked, Sam. As it is, Ah have to order mine from an importer in New Orleans." he says.

"Ah actually had a Turkish Coffee once that wasn't so bad, but Ah really preferred the teas." he says.

Mortification would be had by all if Sammy knew Evelyn had practically given her grandson to Sammy, lock, stock, and lab.

Sammy held on and let the motion take her back and forth, swinging her feet as it went. "If you're looking for Coffee," yes, she said it with a capital C, "I know where to get the best in the city. For experience, Ethiopian coffee can't be beat. Serving it is a ceremony. One day I'll take you to experience it."

"Ah've done a lot of research on them. Ah'd like to see China and Japan someday. Ah'd really like to see China because of Tienanmen Square, but Beijing would be a sight as well.

Ah'd also like to see Hong Kong, for fun. When Ah was in high school, Ah wanted to be a Foreign Exchange student and go to Japan. Ah was really into Japanese culture an' stuff. But things came up and Ah couldn't go." Jason says.

	For that, Sammy made an internal promise that his lab would always have a supply of wildberry Skittles. He lavished compliments and she wanted to believe. "I always have a bag in my quarters and I don't mind sharing." The idea of Jason on caffeine was suddenly not such a great idea. From all accounts, he was the Energizer Bunny's geeky inventor cousin.

Then again, all that energy and passion focused in other directions had the potential to leave her breathless. A dip in the water seemed appropriate now.

"Did you ever come out here at night to swim?"

Jason nods. "Only all the time. Gran would pretend like she didn't know, but Jason and Ah loved it. Later on, we'd have bonfires and cookouts out there, too. Always good times."

The bandages were starting to dry a little and Jason could already feel them starting to stiffen, so he worked at pulling them off.

"Ah have a question that Ah hope isn't stupid, but that Ah think might fall in line with what we're doing as a team." Jason says.

"Ah know we throw down with super-villains and super-powered terrorist types...but what about the human types? Ah mean, there are insurgents in the Middle Easts, issues in Darfur and on Gaza Strip. Now, Ah don't claim to have a ton of knowledge on such things, but...Ah know that Savoy was entertaining selling some of my weapons to True I.R.A. militants and the like.

We've got the muscle and the resources to break the backs of a lot of those other homegrown terrorists groups, it seems to me, Sam. If we shut them down, won't that hurt groups like HYDRA and others who probably get a cut of the suffering they inflict on others?" he asks.

He's really hoping that she's not about to consider him an idiot for asking this, but it's something he's been thinking about since he joined up.

She let the swing slow down, no longer trying to keep it going. "What a lot of people don't realize is that S.H.I.E.L.D. is a United Nations operation and was created specifically to handle super-powered threats of all types. The United States likes to believe it belongs to them, but when the orders come down it's the UN calling the shots. S.H.I.E.L.D. can only go and do what their charter allows them to do. We address world wide problems, and we have have thousands of agents around the world with offices and installations in places people wouldn't think to look. The countries themselves are supposed to handle their individual problems and they can petition the UN for help. The UN may or may not grant their request."

Once the swing was at a stop, Sammy got off and looked to see if the rubber had left any marks on her legs. "That said, S.H.I.E.L.D. can and does take action when they're following their primary objective and happen to come across activities that need to be shut down. The director keeps a list of what he calls his 'sleeper agents' and these shadow individuals have been known to infiltrate, rescue, and terminate when necessary."

"Savoy selling weapons to foreign militants would be the jurisdiction of the United States. A mutant involved, say a gifted inventor with a mutant ability to create weapons after seeing a similar one operate, would come under the heading of 'shared jurisdiction'. S.H.I.E.L.D. has fingers in pies that haven't been created yet."

She smiled. "Does that answer your question?"
