A Strange Quest
Quinn had been thinking about the leprechaun incident and had a feeling it wouldn't be the last time he saw the little annoy creatures. Quinn's magic hadn't been effective and he had to know what to do the next time they came around. Maybe there was a spell or something that would work against them and their magic.

Quinn had to go to the one person who would know about this kind of stuff.

He teleported to 177A Bleecker Street in New York only to find it empty. He wondered where Dr. Strange was.

There was one person who may know. Quinn teleported out to the West Coast and arrived at the front gate of the Defenders.

Happy, giddy Marlow was gone for the time being.

"I'm Marlow. I'm apprenticed to the Sorceress Supreme of the Dark Dimension. Getting Dr. Strange back should be a priority, but in the meantime we need to choose someone to stand as protector to this dimension. Some of us don't want the job, but no matter who's chosen, support has to come from all of us."

"I am Akilah Munroe. I will not attempt to fill this role. My duty is to Wakanda. However, I will not just hand over my support for anyone here. I need proof that anyone among us is truly capable of measuring up to all aspects of it. This job is as political as it is about being powerful. We do not need to be invaded because the new Sorcerer Supreme developed an attitude with an other dimensional being."

And so far into the meeting, there were only two people that Akilah was willing to support; Daniel and Lucas. Melissa was not going to happen. Shelly appeared to be too easily intimidated to take it. As for Marlow and Quinn. Quinn and Marlow could have found a way for either one of them to inherit the role without a meeting of mages. It was likely that neither of them wanted the role, and the world didn't need anybody who was unwilling to take the role.

"I'm Daniel Sherwood," Daniel says standing up. "I come from a long line of magical practitioners from both sides of my family."

He glances around the assembled group. "While I admit, some of us are ready to take on the role, we need a proper way to decide. It is too important for this to be done by choosing straws or something. Any one of us is capable of this job. We just need to find a fair way of weighing all of our options."

Though secretly Daniel would like to step forward. He just thinks he isn't ready yet. There is more to learn.

"I'm Johannes," the stranger said as he stood up. "I can use magic, but I don't know why I'm here."

He sat back down.

Shelly was thinking as everyone made their introductions and it occurred to her even with the Vishanti missing, there had been another way replacements were chosen. Her father had explained them to her in boring detail once when she'd asked him pesky questions as a kid.

"If memory serves, the alternative method of selection for Sorcerer Supreme, if the Vishanti is unavailable, was a contest of sorts. Even Strange has had to battle back for the title before. If we're going select someone, we should do it right and in the manner it has been done through history."

Well. That just made things worse.

"Can I back out now? Because while I'm sure I'd lose, there's some freak chance you'd all come down with food poisoning and be unable to compete and I'd win by default and we'd all be conquered by the guy who's head is on fire by dinner time."

"Just to clear things up, the Vishanti aren't missing. The Book of the Vishanti is which is generally used as the rule book so to speak," Quinn said. "The concern I have with a contest is who would be the judge? Who gathered among us would be impartial enough to qualify as a judge? Unless of course we have a contest until one person is left standing at the end."

Quinn didn't like the idea of a contest. To be honest with himself, he did have a large advantage over the others in terms of training and in raw power. They were in England and that meant right now his raw power equaled that of Dr. Strange. Not that it meant he would necessarily win, but it was an unfair advantage.

"I believe the fairest way would be to leave the decision in the hands of the Vishanti themselves. We can summon them and let them be the judge of who among us is most worthy of being the Sorcerer Supreme."

Shelly arched a brow.

"If the Vishanti are around, they would have selected a replacement already if they deemed it necessary. That's sort of how they work."

"If they are around," Quinn said. "They could be on another tour of planes of existence or just not paying attention at the moment. It has happened in the past." Quinn had many boring history lessons from Dr. Strange over the years not to mention see Strange make a large effort on different occasions just to get their attention. "The only way to be sure is to summon them. If a Sorcerer Supreme is needed they will select one. If not, we all go our have a few pints."

"So, what we're actually here for is a popularity contest, then? Because I see everyone gearing up to pick their friend or buddy or what not." The Hood speculates.

Melissa wasn't a super-genius like May, but she could already tell that no one wanted to consider her for the job. That didn't bother her, but she wasn't going to let them back her down.

"We've already had at least three people say they don't want the job. Fine, they don't want it, that's okay, but they shouldn't be allowed to hamstring the people in question who /are/ willin' to stand up for the task." she says.

"Pride goeth, before a fall." Matt says, looking at the Hood.

"You've got a lot of piss and fire going for you, but you don't know enough to be scared shitless of what's out there. I'm not sure too many people in this room are ready for this job, but I can tell that you sure as hell aren't, and I'm not backing anyone possessed by a demon for this position." he says, looking her square in the eye.

Right now, Matt's comment excludes Marlow, at least in his mind.

"I know who I'm going to back if this comes down to a vote, but perhaps there's a test of some kind we can use." he suggests.

"It's not going to be a vote," Quinn said. "Even if we hold some sort of contest or test, we need a impartial judge. The Vishanti /are/ needed. The ritual to summon them takes some time. I can do it, I have once before, but I will gladly step aside if someone else wants to do it."

Dawn chewed nervously on her lower lip.

I've got a bad feeling about this. Oh, God, I hope I'm not it.

"Normally, I would offer to help judge... usually my role in contests, but I agree, the Vishanti are probably best suited for the task. As a ritualist, and someone used to communicating with planar beings, Mr. Braddock, I might have the best success in contacting them quickly, with some assistance. In this case, it probably doesn't hurt that my magics are probably the ones most aligned with theirs." Which is true, as far as he can tell, he's the only purely white magic practitioner here... which probably also doesn't make him the best suited for the job. He'll take it if the Vishanti choose him, but he hopes, at least, they'll take note of the fact that sometimes a little grey magic, at least, is necessary.

"In the meantime, maybe we should break until the ritual is ready." Marlow looked around the table to gauge the candidates and didn't like what she was seeing. "Unless you need us to assist," she added to Lucas.

"I'll also offer to help help with the summoning, if necessary. I'm aware of the ritual. Otherwise, Marlow's suggestion for a recess sounds good." Matt says. Whisper could use a walk before he pounced on the Red Raging Hood over there, and he wanted to speak to Shelly, too. If he'd know she was going to be here, he'd have offered to travel with her.

Besides, he had to apologize for The Incident again.

"Breaks are good. It's been a long day."

There were too many egos and issues at the moment and more than that, too many unknown people. Having a few minutes to clear her head before anything got started would be good.

"If you need me, I'll be over there." She pointed to a location and then quietly walked there. Matt being here threw her and she couldn't decide if she was angry, hurt, or just felt stupid.

"I will gladly accept help from anyone who wishes to offer it. I need at least one assistant familiar with dimensional magics... Mr. Braddock will do nicely. For everyone else... join if you like, I am always willing to accept assistance, though a good deal of diplomacy will likely be involved. For everyone else... the tension is high in here. A chance to talk amongst yourselves might be beneficial. We will let you know when we're done."

The Hood picks a corner and occupies it, knowing the amount of sanctimonious crap going on in this so-called meeting. She watches everyone in the room, making sure that no one can catch her unaware.
