Returning home (Meme- Fluff, Meeting Again)
It was supposed to just be a week long trip to a dig site. It was going to help her finish off her degree so she could focus on her other duties full time. And really everything should have gone smoothly! It had. Mostly.

Except she got talked into staying for another week when they stumbled across a big find that was more of Kayura's area of specialty. It was really hard to say no because it was a fantastic example of mid-thirteenth century armor and it had been exciting.

Then she had wrenched her knee badly the day before she had to leave. She had to delay going back because of that. The site medic didn't want her to risk tearing something since they had to hike to and from the dig site. So now it was almost three weeks later and now she is finally back and so happy to just have to wait for the date to graduate more or less.

But boy was this a little embarrassing. Almost two weeks late coming home even though she had sent word explaining everything.

"That is lucky." he agrees. "There have been times I would have appreciated that gift. The Kenku... insisted that when I was injured, such as when I fell when climbing the mountainside, that I should learn to practice and fight when injured, because an enemy would not let me take a break." Not something he usually talks about or admits. "But I agree, sitting around does no one any good."

"I never liked sitting for any period of time," she admits.
"It's worse now that I know I have things to do."

She still thinks it is a pity that she was an only child. She does know there is a remote chance she has distant cousins out there but she is worried about trying to contact them. What could she possibly say to them?

It doesn't matter, when the time is right she will continue the family as she was meant to. She shouldn't worry herself over that duty right now. She's still young.

He doesn't know about her duty to continue the family, nor would he comment on it if he did.

"There are times sitting and listening is useful."

It would be one of those things no one speaks of.

"That doesn't always make something that's useful enjoyable. Sort of like going to the doctor's office. Sometimes it' pleasant but you don't do it because it might be pleasant."

"Most of the things we do are not pleasant. It is the fun things, the enjoyable and the pleasant, that makes the rest worth it... while the rest are there to keep what is enjoyable in perspective and help us appreciate it."

That gets her to dip her head slightly and smile. She agrees with him of course. She just doesn't think there's anything she can add.

He smiles, in that relatively slight smile way of his, nodding to her, before setting to serving a bit more tea to go with her oreos.

"Thank you." Still she will be nibbling on an Oreo now though. She really does love them. And she couldn't have them on the dig site so she has missed these too.

They were, really, rather hard to get. Now, there's about a thousand things /like/ Oreos that are very easy. Knock offs of various qualities of all sorts abound here. Once again, that wasn't going to suffice at all. Hajime himself avoids them entirely, and truth be told, really usually doesn't snack, or otherwise eat anything outside of mealtime, especially at tea - but he doesn't say anything, and just appreciates what he views as a quirk.

"Very welcome."

That's why they have the Best Boss Ever. Kayura also looks really pleased to have tea.

And no she won't dip Oreos into the tea. That would be gross.

Of course, Hajime would never mention that Oreos are kind of gross- mostly the being filled with entirely unidentifiable... stuff. Not that a lot of what the kenku ate and served was pleasant, but he knew what it was.

"So what is next in your studies?"

"In two weeks I have to turn in papers I've been ready to turn in for almost a month now. Then I have to take a series of tests. Then I graduate."

She stares at her tea now.

"I think the dig was a pretext for my Professor to peak with me privately, Sempai. He is.... a bit puzzled I have refrained from applying to study for my Masters degree. I don't need it. It's something I would like but I don't think I have time."

She never saw it as giving anything up.

"I have to do what's practical. Masters degrees are harder. Sometimes you have to teach and.... I don't have time." Even if she would enjoy it. She has to be practical.

He can appreciate the viewpoint, but fully realizes how much one might like to do that never happens, for sake of family as well as anyone.

"Indeed, between practice and your duties... maybe someday, but not right now."

That has her pull a slight face.

She has such an odd life.

He doesn't, but doesn't particularly let it show. She can fill in what details she feels the need to. "I'm pretty sure I had a dog once. It seems a very long time ago. I understand they can take a lot of time too, yes."

"He's an interesting dog," she supplies. She does smile though at the mention of time. "He has not been so difficult to care for. A friend of mine from school watched him for me while I was on that trip. This summer I'll be looking in on her cat while she goes on a trip."

A favor for a favor was a very common thing. Se doesn't seem to like asking her uncle for things. She barely mentions him even in passing.

And even were he curious, he doesn't ask. Asking after possibly unfortunate family members might be construed as rude.

That mention will likely never come from Hajime. He comes from a culture where the best thing to do with uncomfortable topics, if at all possible, was to pretend they don't exist. Kayura can bring such things up if she wishes.

"A good thing to have."

Which is so useful in modern times. It helps avoid very uncomfortable conversations by not starting them. Ever.

Honestly, he's always surprised at how much that has changed, and how casually people nowadays casually bring up uncomfortable topics for people - and that's just Japan. These 'American' people sound particularly horrible.

"I would suppose so. For obvious reasons, my social circle is kept very small now."
