Courting Death - Signs
Kalypso wasn't sleeping, she didn't need to sleep, but she was letting herself doze a bit and let her mind wander. Jack was asleep next to her and she was aware of his rhythmic breathing. She idly wondered what he was dreaming of and while it was tempting to peek into his dreams, Kal respected his privacy.

Her mind wandered.

Then came the warning from her mother. "Stay away from Olympia!" Then Sersi's mental presence was gone. Cut off as quickly as it came.

Kal quickly sat up in the bed. "Mother?" she sent out.

No response.

She searched for other Eternals and found none.

Azura was yelling about Quill's stupidity in the back of his mind as Abel swooped down and grabbed two kids. He spotted two more and grabbed them as well. He moved one around to his back and the kid held on by wrapping his arms around Abel's neck. One was in front of Abel with her arms around his neck. The other two were tucked under each arm.

He flew as fast as he could toward Ride.

Red poured on the speed. "Kid, if you are not stopping with the screaming, I am going to be leaving you behind!"

Alex's insides twisted, but there'd only be time for self-recriminations and wondering if he'd made the wrong call later. Right now his mind kicks into overdrive. The door isn't shut yet. Okay, planet needs to stay mostly intact. Loss of life was inevitable, and for those not able to evacuate, it's probably still a better deal than that... unlife.

"There's no cancellation protocol for a strike like this. There's nothing the assault crews will respond to for that...." He snaps his fingers a few times, trying to think, before inspiration strikes. "But they can respond to a change in payload!" He rushes to the ship's console and begins typing out communiques in a flurry of motion, telekinesis allowing him to work with more than just his two hands.

A minute later, the bombardment of explosives seems to halt here and there, before restarting with different projectiles. Energy signatures begin changing as well. The undead are struck by the attacks and begin to dissolve, even if they reform almost immediately. The living seem unharmed, and the undead are slowed across the world.

"I don't care what's repairing those bastards, they're still made of necrotized flesh and bone right now." Alex growls. "It's an old Kree protocol for containing biological plagues. Hardly even used anymore these days, but with what their military bureaucracy is, nobody ever bothered taking it off the books or out of the budgets, so it's standard to all their ships. Shi'ar can copy the energy signature. Closest Terran equivalent is... is... like putting maggots on a wound. Only with lasers."

He finally picks his head up, looking at the planet out of the main window. "Structural damage... infrastructure... this planet's never going to be what it was again, but this is at least the best chance for evac we have." He opens a channel to the reinforcement ships, giving orders to corral all evacuation vessels for inspection.

Gods forgive him, because he wasn't likely to forgive himself anytime soon.

Jean-Louise is still fairly in shock.

"...let...let me know if you need anything turned into anything else," is all she can manage.

"I do. Turn everything possible out here to energy. Any form, but cosmic radiation is easiest." Iason coms back to Jean-Louise.

"Quill - think of the flesh and bone as... decoration for millions of tiny black holes."

Time to try and save as much of a world's biosphere as he can. Iason finds a spot in low orbit, and begins focusing all his energy on siphoning power towards himself, drawing in more and more energy to try and limit how much the bombardment tears the world apart.

And Jean Louise reaches out at all the bombarding things and does her best. She's certainly seen enough cosmic radiation in the past year to have it fairly down, although there's a lot of bizarre types of smoke and other paraphernalia and one missle may have turned into orange-slice candy because she's really stretching herself here and some patterns are a bit overpracticed.

Abel carrying the four kids entered Ride and dropped them off. He zoomed back to find any more survivors.

Eliza gets as many civilians as she can loaded. This place needs to be evacuated as soon as possible.

Iason draws in more and more of the radiation Jean-Louise is creating, drawing bombardment off the planet, while trying to contemplate any of this.

It makes no sense.

And he keeps dreading this is somehow related to the missing Eternals. Timing like that is rarely coincidence.

Red deposited the screaming child inside the Ride. "Is anyone belong to this screaming child? Can anyone be shutting it up?"

It takes almost another hour before enough field commanders can be convinced they've fulfilled the task at hand to their satisfaction, but the bombardment eventually stops.

Nothing sentient and living remains on the planet's surface. The wounded are being pulled from evac ships to confirm whether or not they carry any infection.

Alex finishes up a rather aggressively conducted discussion with an Imperial Guardsman still in favor of atomizing the planet, jabbing a finger to end the transmission once he has assurances of no more attacks. He lets out a snarl through gritted teeth and just hurls his helmet, the symbol of the title his father had passed down to him, back against the far wall of the ship, before leaning his head against one of the windows and just staring at the planet.

This was his fault... It was his job to find the solution in situations like this, and he'd been wrong.

As Alex's best friend, it was Red's job to cheer him up when he was down.

"Do not be worrying, Alex. You can be blowing up the next one, maybe."

Iason takes off towards the sun, calling as he goes.

"I need to release a lot of the excess energy, before I start burning up ships. I will catch up with you in a few hours."
