Independents:
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

Christmas Day is a Christian holiday, it's true, but it also has become increasingly secular. It is an opportunity for love, charity, and goodwill.

There is some debate within mystical circles if there is indeed such a creature as the embodiment of Christmas Giving known as Santa Claus. But whether or not there is such a being, the spirit of giving itself is very real, be it incarnated in a fat man in a red suit or not.

Throughout this small blue planet of Earth, people have brought trees into their homes, decorated them with lights and ornaments, and placed them in locations of honor. Stockings have been placed on the chimneys. And gifts have been placed under the tree.

Some are looking forward more to the receiving than the giving. But for many, it is the act of giving which warms them, which fills them with the holiday spirit.

Each person, in their own way, becomes a part of this spirit of giving. Each person, in their own way, becomes Santa Claus.

Kalypso had very few to shop for. Mom, Iason and Jack. Still, even with so few, they were almost impossible to shop for. Mom had helped her with Jack's gift. Kal had found a nice set of billy clubs, but she needed her mother's help to turn them into adamantium. Kal did not possess any transmutation abilities what so ever.

Iason was difficult to say the least. Kal had finally settled on gift cards/gift certificates to various restaurants around New York. From Italian to Tibetan. Sure he could just travel to those places, but now that he had a girlfriend, he had a reason to go out to eat around New York.

Mom got a promise for a day together doing something of her choice.

Iason stops by to bring Kal her present in person, since its not something that can easily be left under the tree. Specifically, a promisory note, whenever they can obtain or transmute protective gear for Jack, to take his cousin and her boyfriend away for a week on one of the Shi'ar pleasure worlds without telling her mother.

Sersi will be getting gift certificates for a spa in Greece.

Jack let Kal know he would be at his parents' hotel suite Christmas morning, and that they would be having a late lunch with Eliza that afternoon. The invitation was extended for Kal to join them.

He had gifts gathered and ready to hand out.

They had been invited to the Christmas Eve bash at the Avengers' mansion, but Elektra and Matt had wisely opted to not go. They planned to meet up with Jack, Eliza and possibly Jack's girlfriend on Christmas Day.

The morning was spent with strong coffee and watching the news.

The neatly wrapped boxes of charcoals and pastels for Jack were stacked on each other as Matt sipped his coffee.

"So do you think Kal will be joining us?"

Jack nodded. "She's with her mother and her cousin this morning, but she'll be free later. Probably again telling Sersi we don't want to move in together right now."

He shook his head with a slight smile. "I know it seems like she can't wait to get rid of Kal, but it's not that at all. Kal being an Eternal and me plain ol' human, Sersi thinks we should be taking advantage of all the time I have left. We get around the subject by telling her we've decided to wait a year before discussing it. We're hoping that with a time frame, she'll lay off the subject for awhile. It does for the most part."

"I do suppose that when you are going to live forever that one would have a different outlook on time." Elektra paused for a noticeable moment. "What about Eliza? Will she be joining us?" Personal feelings aside, the girl was family and should be included in things. Thankfully this could be done without having to deal with The Russian.

"It's a good plan," Matt agrees simply.

"I certainly hope she can make it."

"As far as I know she'll be arriving this afternoon for lunch." He shrugged a little. His acquaintance with Eliza was just that, an acquaintance. They didn't hang out and have lunch or call and email. It was a little sad, but she stayed mainly with the other side and the Avengers. He didn't have to get used to being anything other than an only child.

Matt deeply appreciates Elektra's being able to mention that in a reasonable fashion.

"It'll be good to hear how she's doing. But as it's you we have right now, how are you doing, Jack?"

Jack also appreciated Mom being able to say the words without her fingers twitching to hold a sai.

"I'm good, Dad. My final semester project was selected by a non-profit to build on a playground. Both Kal and I were asked by the Young Avengers to be reserve members. I understand they're down one temporarily, but I don't know the particulars."

Elektra wasn't quite sure how to take the news about her son being a reserve Avenger. She'd talk it over with Matt later. Right now they could focus on Christmas.

"That's great to hear, Jack," she told her son. "We'll have to visit when the playground is done so we can see the final results."

"It's part of a campaign to get kids to be more active. I like climbing and jumping, so I built off that idea."

He went to the small fridge and took out a bottle of water. "Which brings me to another subject. I've been doing some climbing and jumping. Around the city. From rooftops."

"I'm not trying to be Daredevil Jr.," he assured them, "just finding a way to help out while I'm working on my degree. Kal's hoping to become an Avenger, but I'm not opposed to helping out if needed. It keeps my skills up, too."

"I know you aren't, Mom." He gave her a smile. "Since we helped retake S.H.I.E.L.D., we're not exactly under the radar and I heard Dad and Nick Fury used to be friends. I'd rather you hear it from me."

It was always easier to tell Mom things first. Her look could be pretty unnerving.

Jack grinned. His dad was one of the most patient people he knew. "Yes ma'am."

His parents knew just what he liked and art supplies were at the top of every gift list he'd ever handed them. "Thanks! I have a couple of new projects coming up for the next semester and these will be put to good use." He kissed his mother's cheek. Dad got an arm squeeze.

That afternoon Eliza showed up at her brother's apartment. She had a bag on one shoulder filled with gifts. Things she had thought of that her brother might need and some other things for Dad and Elektra.

And she hadn't forgotten Kal either. She really wanted to make this work.

They'd stopped at Jack's place so he could change clothes and Mom could check the apartment to make sure he was eating okay, staying warm enough, and that the neighbors weren't annoying. Jack wasn't sure how she could tell all that by a short tour through the limited space, but he'd long since stop questioning her motives. Moms were unpredictable creatures.

He heard the step outside the door as he left his room fixing his color and detoured over to answer it as the bell rang. "Hey, Merry Christmas."
