Sad news
Throughout the U.S., every network, and many cable stations break into their regular coverage. The image of the Daily Planet comes on screen, followed by an image of a blonde woman with a tear streaked face. In the background, there's the ruins of a LexCorp facility.

"This is Carol Phelps for the Daily Planet." she begins, composing herself as she goes into field reporter mode. Even at her age, this is usually a Lois Lane job, but she's on assignment elsewhere - and this is very specific news. "And today, I'm sure the world will join us here at the Planet in mourning. Metropolis' first son, our visitor and protector from the stars - Superman, is dead. The tragedy occurred following a battle with noted business tycoon and former politician Lex Luthor, who appeared to have gone back to his criminal roots. The pair, along with a large number of robots and automated weaponry battled for hours in the skies above Metropolis. What brought about the conflict isn't certain.
What we do know is that Superman defeated Luthor and the apparent weapons, containing the damage to a small section of Metropolis around the LexCorp facility behind me, at significant cost to himself. At that point, and unknown third party arrived on the scene. We have not yet identified this person, who appears on cameras only as a shadowy outline. The stranger had words for Luthor and Superman both - we are attempting to find out what was said even now. Whoever the unknown party was, however, he then..."
she pauses, struggling to find her voice. "He slew first Lex Luthor, and then Superman, using some sort of lightning based weapon. We are not replaying the footage here, as the graphic nature of the images may be too shocking for some viewers, but it will be made available once authorities have had a chance to review them.

For now, a great deal remains unknown. What we do know is that the city... the planet, is without its first son. Superman is dead."

News this big didn't take long to spread even down to Atlantis. Arthur was saddened by the loss of his friend. The crown he wore grew heavier.

The "other assignment" Lois was on wasn't an assignment at all. She was still in shock, ensconced in the safety of the Fortress--where Clark had left her when he went to deal with the threat at LexCorp.

For once the reporter was literally at a loss for words. All she could do was cry.

Jon is there for his mother, just hugging her for the first hour.

He wants to cry, he wants to mourn. But he can't right now. His mother needs him - soon, maybe, the world will need him. So far, there's no sign that all the things that previously 'resurrected' Superman are doing anything. No cellular regeneration, nothing.

He's having to slowly start to admit it to himself - he's Superman now.

If Clark were coming back, Lois would know. She always knew, even when things looked their bleakest. Lois could feel him and it let her never give up hope. This time was different. Clark wasn't coming home. The world would need a new Superman.

After an hour, she extricated herself from her son. There were things she would have to do, other family to call, people to gather together, but there was something more important than that to do first.

Jon. He'd looked like his father from the start and now the likeness was just eerie. It would only get more so. Lois moved to the closet before walking to her child.

"And so the world called upon the only son."

She handed Jon his father's cape.

His hands are trembling as he takes the cape. All his life, he's struggled with his identity - who was he? What was he? What did it mean to be the first son of a living legend, a near god from the stars? In moments of crisis, it was always so clear. the rest of the time? He was never so certain. The trip to where Krypton hadn't provided any answers, just left him with more questions.

Now, there isn't time to wonder anymore. With unsteady hands, he puts the cape on.

"And the world will have an answer." he responds quietly.

She does for Jon what she always did for his father. She smoothes the cape and makes sure it's on straight, tugging the edges a bit. Lois has no questions. She never has. She knows, just as she always knew for Clark, exactly who her son is.

Hope .

She has no words, but the pride in her eyes--in spite of the sorrow--say it all and with a tiptoe-delivered kiss to his cheek she nods.

Superman is dead. Long live Superman.

Cindy watched in shock.
She thought of all the implications, but what she most thought of was the fact that the appropriate thing to do when a friend lost a family member was to bring them food. However, she doubted Jon and his mom were home anyway.

Rex can't believe it. Someone took down Superman? This is insane, and on the heels of everything that's happened already, he's not just wondering if anyone is out to bring them all down, he's damn sure of it.

If that's the case, they aren't all going without a damned fight.

"Yes, sir, I'm watching the news as well and seeing the reports. The super-types are going to want blood for this one." Angela says.

You will take no offensive or investigative action regarding Superman's death. Do not involve the Suicide Squad at this time. Manchester Black speaks into her mind.

"Sir, the heroes are being dropped like flies right now. That kid from Keystone City is still missing, and two Atlanteans are dead as well. Not to mention that Hawkman and Hawkwoman are dead...again.

I know that millions of people die every day, but this is getting to be too well-timed and well-planned. They might think /we're/ hunting them again." Angela reasons.

Again, take no offensive action. This is actually /helping/ us in the long run, Agent Holt. The fewer of them there are, the less we have to monitor. Wait for further orders.

"Yes, sir." Angela says feeling Black's presence leave her mind.

This whole thing is bad and Angela can only think it's going to get worse.

Sindella was at one of her mother's shows when they got the news. Her heart sank, as she thought of Jon, and what her friend must being going through right now.

Her mom walked off the stage, not even doing her grand finale, and went straight to her dressing room. In the dressing room, Sindella clung to her mother as the two of them cried.

Will doesn't want to believe the news. They said the same thing when Superman died the first time, and they were wrong.

But heroes had died before without coming back. Superman may had just been a lucky one.

So where Will is, at the top of the radio transmitter of WHIZ, he stands up. He didn't fly up there, he climbed it, and he did it for a specific reason. heroes were flashy. they were supposed to grab the attention of those who wished to harm as well as those who needed inspiration.

And so Will dropped.

"SHAZAM!"

The lightning bolt and thunder would catch anyones attention for miles, but this was at the WHIZ tower, at the heart of Fawcett City. It was bound to draw attention.

It was time to get to work. Mourning Superman would have to wait.

In Keystone City, Iris was in-between her parents, holding both of their hands. Uncle Barry and Uncle Bart had come over the second that they had heard the news. It seemed like all she had done was cry lately, as once again she found herself in tears. She'd go visit Jon to see how he was doing, but he probably didn't want to see anyone right now.
