Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

	Sammy put her free hand on their joined hands. She enjoyed the simple human contact far more than expected, as if her skin was starving for it. "Right now it's a translation of the Shi'ar version of 'The Art of War'. I got it for Christmas and haven't absorbed it all yet. Do you read anything that doesn't need a screwdriver to get it open?" 	"Ah've never heard of the Shi'ar, but Ah've read 'The Art of War'. Ah like to read some fantasy novels, and Ah really love anything on the War for Southern Independence. "Ah pointed her in the direction of the Fantastic Four to get some help for her family. Last Ah heard, she'd settled in over in New York and had gotten a job." Tech says. He hadn't been able to check on Reyja recently, but he thought it might be a good idea to do so.

He'd nearly lost his virginity by force to that woman, but she turned out not to be a bad person, after the whole Empress-is-holding-my-family-hostage bit.

"Ah never did properly thank you for comin' after me, Boss Lady." Tech grins. "Thank you."

He places his free hand on top of both of hers and his own.

Sammy intended the words to be light and even teasing, but they sounded suspiciously Not Happy to her own ears. "I think a couple of the girls from the ship are here." "She was nice, after a fashion, but she just wasn't my type." Tech says, shrugging his shoulders. He opens Sam's left palm and begins tracing the assorted lines he finds there. Sometimes, he wishes he'd paid more attention when Old Mrs. Lawson had been teaching him about palm reading.

"Ah don't believe anything that's yours would ever let you go without a fight, Sam. You just have that quality that makes people want to do their best for you. Ah've seen it with the team." Tech says, tracing a line that runs from the outside of her palm to the middle.

That's the second time he's felt the air in the room change when he's said or done something. He feels that he's getting to know her better, so if he'd done something to outright piss her off, she might say something, even if it's about how she doesn't want to discuss this.

This time, however, he only peers at her to see if she'll offer anything more. When she doesn't, Tech latches onto her next comment to keep the conversation going.

"Ah think you're bein' a bit modest, but there's nothin' wrong with that, Fury." Tech says, as the biscuits and gravy finally arrives.

"Ah hope you like the food, Sam. It's really good here." Tech says.

	"I'm sure I will. It smells good." She released his hands and pulled back a little, in every sense of the word. She'd let the intimacy draw her in, and it was too soon to let it get to her. The release of the touch between them leaves a bit of a void between them, a distance that Tech remembers from a few days ago, when they were just the Boss and the Technical Guy.

Maybe he'd been fooling himself into thinking there was something more. There were things he didn't know about Sam Fury and those things made appearances when he least expected it. So far, she'd seen all of his issues and heard from people who'd known him when.

Not once yet has he seen or heard anything about her.

"Don't worry, Fury, the day is still young." Tech says, getting himself a couple of the biscuits and then slathering the sausage gravy all over them.

"Ah figure after this, we can stop by the hospital and check on Gran. No one's called me yet, which is a little strange. Ah'm sure there'll be some words soon enough." he says, starting to eat.

"Is it really that strange? It's hardly breakfast time." She followed suit by pouring on the gravy over opened, steaming biscuits and tasting it with a fingertip. It was delicious.

"I admit, I'm no judge of these things. Whenever I've been injured or shot or sick, I was in S.H.I.E.L.D. Medical and hourly reports were sent to Mom's office. She'd come seem me between meetings, and Dad would show up in the middle of the night from the helicarrier."

	"Ah guess it's not really. Ah'm just a worry wart, really. Ah worry about Gran and Jess all the time, even though Ah send them money and call every day." Jason says. Tech nods.

"Ah don't know anyone in New York, either. Ah've only been to a big city once, when Ah was little, and it was just...a lot to take in. New York is all of that and then some. Ah mean, Ah might be able to get Gran to visit, but she's a Southern woman, and she'd miss home before too long." he says.

"So, it's worth the commute to be able to see her, after seeing Jake, too." Jason says.

"Ah was thinkin' about what you told me, Sam, and Ah think Ah will do ask Jake asks, after Ah see him one last time. Ah want him to know that Ah don't like the idea, but that Ah'll accede to his wishes if it helps him endure his time." he says.

Sammy nodded in return. She didn't like that she'd given in to Jake's wishes either, but in the end it was what was best for Tech. After looking into those dead eyes, it was best to get Tech away from that before he died inside, too.

"I'm still a reserve member of the Young Avengers so I have quarters there if I need a place to stay. Mom and Dad's place always has room for me, but I've been thinking about it. I've never had a place of my own either. The helicarrier isn't meant to be a permanent address. It's a work place. I'm considering putting in a requisition for one of the safe buildings for a team lodging if anyone needs an apartment to get away from it all."

"Yeah, Ah'd probably need my own place, since Ah tend to live a bit cluttered, as you can tell. Ah like to have a space to work and a space to sleep, and it's never good to make those places one and the same." Tech tells her.

"But thank you for offerin'. If you do decide to ask for one of those team lodgin' buildings, Ah'd be happy to hang out there." he tells her.

"Jake was gonna build another house on the property, and give me his when the baby came...but Ah couldn't see myself leavin' Gran alone, even if it was a few miles away, in our parents old house. He did a lot of fixing on it, though." Tech says.

Sammy grinned back. The earlier feeling of intimacy came flowing back. Dad always called Mom Beautiful and she thought it one of the most romantic things ever. Tech did it with such ease that she couldn't believe such casual flirtation wasn't natural for him. Only one girlfriend? How did that happen?

"It doesn't have to be a big place but there does need to be room for everyone to have a front door they can close. I love Alice dearly, but I don't want to run into her bed partners when I'm trying to get to the coffee pot. And we could have an apartment for visitors, like your grandmother, to come and stay a bit, see the sights, that sort of thing. And a building manager for security and various other things. Say, eight to ten apartments." Her orderly mind was already chewing over the idea.

She took her PDA out and began to make notes while she ate.

"A visitor's place would be really nice. Gran would at least come visit, and then you'd get homemade food the whole time she was there. Even if we both know you'd fuss about how much weight you were gainin' the whole time." Jason grins.

"Ah still can't believe Alice is like you said she is. Ah...just can't picture it, even though Ah don't want to. She just seems so...not that way." Tech laughs.

"You know what Ah realized you need, Sam? A gun that can make coffee for you. Give a whole new meanin' to the term 'espresso shot', wouldn't it?" he asks, marveling at how easily organization came to her. He could give her a yarn and she'd make a sweater with no trouble.

"Ah admire your organizational capabilities, Sam. You'd make a good scientist or weapon designer, if you were of a mind to do it. Ah'm surprised you don't make your own guns yourself." he says honestly.

"I don't have the talent for it," she said absently, still tapping in her ideas. "Alice is a very dear person and she likes men. Nothing wrong with that. If she decides to settle down, that guy will be very lucky and I'll shoot him if he ever makes her unhappy."

She glanced up. "I'd fuss, but the fact is that I have a hard time keeping the weight on. My ability uses up calories faster than I can eat them. It's not unusual to come off a mission ten pounds lighter depending on how often I have to stop time. My quarters are usually filled with snack foods as well as coffee."

	She hadn't noticed his comment about the gun that makes coffee. Perhaps he can surprise her with it someday in the future. He continues to eat, taking a sip from his Coke. If it ever needs any work, Ah'll help out." Tech grins. "Yeah, we'll need a good kitchen in that visitor's apartment. Gran would feed this team until we beg for mercy." he says. "I'm not too fond of Moon Pies. It's the marshmallow filling. Too sweet for me."

She was full and didn't want to give up on the few bites left on her plate. It was too good to leave any behind.

"Your grandmother would own us body and soul. My espresso-slash-coffeemaker was a gift and top of the line equipment. It should be okay for awhile. Thanks for the offer. I'll keep it in mind. Along with the gun that shoots espresso shots." She winked. She didn't always answer, but she always listened.
