Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

Sammy grinned back. The earlier feeling of intimacy came flowing back. Dad always called Mom Beautiful and she thought it one of the most romantic things ever. Tech did it with such ease that she couldn't believe such casual flirtation wasn't natural for him. Only one girlfriend? How did that happen?

"It doesn't have to be a big place but there does need to be room for everyone to have a front door they can close. I love Alice dearly, but I don't want to run into her bed partners when I'm trying to get to the coffee pot. And we could have an apartment for visitors, like your grandmother, to come and stay a bit, see the sights, that sort of thing. And a building manager for security and various other things. Say, eight to ten apartments." Her orderly mind was already chewing over the idea.

She took her PDA out and began to make notes while she ate.

"A visitor's place would be really nice. Gran would at least come visit, and then you'd get homemade food the whole time she was there. Even if we both know you'd fuss about how much weight you were gainin' the whole time." Jason grins.

"Ah still can't believe Alice is like you said she is. Ah...just can't picture it, even though Ah don't want to. She just seems so...not that way." Tech laughs.

"You know what Ah realized you need, Sam? A gun that can make coffee for you. Give a whole new meanin' to the term 'espresso shot', wouldn't it?" he asks, marveling at how easily organization came to her. He could give her a yarn and she'd make a sweater with no trouble.

"Ah admire your organizational capabilities, Sam. You'd make a good scientist or weapon designer, if you were of a mind to do it. Ah'm surprised you don't make your own guns yourself." he says honestly.

"I don't have the talent for it," she said absently, still tapping in her ideas. "Alice is a very dear person and she likes men. Nothing wrong with that. If she decides to settle down, that guy will be very lucky and I'll shoot him if he ever makes her unhappy."

She glanced up. "I'd fuss, but the fact is that I have a hard time keeping the weight on. My ability uses up calories faster than I can eat them. It's not unusual to come off a mission ten pounds lighter depending on how often I have to stop time. My quarters are usually filled with snack foods as well as coffee."

	She hadn't noticed his comment about the gun that makes coffee. Perhaps he can surprise her with it someday in the future. He continues to eat, taking a sip from his Coke. 	"Hey, there is nothin' wrong with any of those!" he says. "Ah like Moon Pies, too, when Ah can get 'em, but they're hard to find. How's the coffee maker in your quarters workin'? If it ever needs any work, Ah'll help out." Tech grins. "Yeah, we'll need a good kitchen in that visitor's apartment. Gran would feed this team until we beg for mercy." he says. "I'm not too fond of Moon Pies. It's the marshmallow filling. Too sweet for me."

She was full and didn't want to give up on the few bites left on her plate. It was too good to leave any behind.

"Your grandmother would own us body and soul. My espresso-slash-coffeemaker was a gift and top of the line equipment. It should be okay for awhile. Thanks for the offer. I'll keep it in mind. Along with the gun that shoots espresso shots." She winked. She didn't always answer, but she always listened.

	Tech just smiles as Sam speaks and he sneaks a glance around at the other faces in the room, who look on with various expressions of disbelief, surprise and even encouragement. 	She took his arm, clutching it to her in an adoring manner, and smiled a goodbye around the restaurant on their way out. "If I was a churchgoing young lady, I'd have to spend all next week in confession," she said, laughing. "As it is, I'll only have to explain any rumors of improper behavior to your grandmother." 	"A smart man keeps track of anything he wants to remember the rest of his life, Sam." Tech says genuinely. Of course, the smile falters a little when he follows her train of thought. 	That made her melt just a little. Even if it was a line, it was a good one. "I answer for my own actions, thank you." She said a bit tartly, but in good humor. "And my own words. "Tell her that and she's like to do something crazy, like agree with you." Jason grins. He couldn't think of a girl around here who would do or say the things Sam had already said, let alone admit to them.

She and Gran were a lot alike.

"So, to the hospital, and then to buy a swimsuit for my lady. That sounds like a good way to spend a day right there." he says.

Tech takes the offered hand, drawing strength from the simple touch between the two of them. He's not certain he could have done this alone, so he's doubly thankful that Sam is here.

"Yeah, it'll be okay." he says, though whether he's agreeing with her or trying to convince the two of them is uncertain from his tone.

The pair arrive at Evelyn Landon's room and find her...watching television, and laughing.

Evelyn is resting comfortably on the white-linen bed, and her head turns quickly to the pair as they arrive. She is about to speak, but when she notices her grandson hand-in-hand with Sam, she smiles brightly at the both of them.

She's still a little pale, and there are tubes in her nose, but otherwise, Evelyn is in good spirits.

"Well hello, you two. You're both up very early. What brings you out so early?" she asks coyly.
