A Strange Quest
Quinn had been thinking about the leprechaun incident and had a feeling it wouldn't be the last time he saw the little annoy creatures. Quinn's magic hadn't been effective and he had to know what to do the next time they came around. Maybe there was a spell or something that would work against them and their magic.

Quinn had to go to the one person who would know about this kind of stuff.

He teleported to 177A Bleecker Street in New York only to find it empty. He wondered where Dr. Strange was.

There was one person who may know. Quinn teleported out to the West Coast and arrived at the front gate of the Defenders.

Lucas /hates/ to be the one to deliver this news. This is even looking somewhat arranged now. But there's a reason shamans were selected as judges and interpreters of law, and for conducting ceremony. He'd rather this was kept neat and clean... but sparking a new war is not a good idea... and there's one other factor.

"The Vishanti's mark of favoring Strange as their representative is marked by the possession of the Book of the Vishanti... before that, there was a war over Strange's allegiance... without the book, there is... some small legitimacy to his claim."

Much as Lucas would like to disagree totally with Johannes.

"Hm. This sounds a lot like more politics." Hood says, looking at the assembled.

"Strange and his little book aren't here, so maybe both groups /should/ make the decision this time." Hood says. "Might make for less drama in the future, in case Strange doesn't make it back."

Dawn is not mystically knowledgeable, beyond what little research she'd done and the practice she'd put in with Marlow. All the rest, like the elemental magics that came so easily, had been downloaded directly into her head.

But she knew people. She knew she got nervous easily and paranoid and all that, but she was, frankly speaking, the only remotely normal person here (and that's counting the whole avatar thing) And this sounded a whole hell of a lot like some of the arguments the guys who played D&D during the library game nights had had.

"You little rule-mongering shit." It was directed at Johannes.

Johannes just grinned at the blonde. "Rules are rules," he said. "No book, so the Octessence should get a say. They give their power to the Sorcerer Supreme as well as the Vishanti."

"He's right," Quinn said. Didn't mean he liked it. "The Sorcerer Supreme does call upon the powers of both and without the Book, both sides should have a say."

Yeah, this guy keeps his mouth shut the entire meeting, then suddenly pipes up with a desire to bring the Octessence in. No, that didn't look like a set up at all.

"Then maybe we need to table this discussion and figure out if Strange and the book are really gone, because I'm sure as hell not helping to give the Octessence a bigger foothold around here than necessary. We find the book, figure out where Strange is and do this the right way, before the wrong person ends up as Sorcerer Supreme." Matt says.

"I'm with Matt. I'm sorry, but my father has been involved with this whole mess before--and I frankly wish he were here instead of me because he's one rule-loving bastard--(mostly because he liked to break the rules, she thought to herself) and while this situation appears to be without protocol...seems really damn fishy that Strange and the book is gone and suddenly someone's wanting to call on the Octessence."

She shook her head.

"Awfully convenient."

"And he waits until now to bring it up," Dawn said. "Sits through our--your whole plan without hardly a word, barely acts like he wants to be here, and now he goes and pulls this? That's just suspicious. And he's acting smug about it?"

Great. Babbling. But productive babbling in this case. This part was something she could wrap her brain around.

"It doesn't matter when it was brought up," Quinn said. Though a little more warning would have been nice not to mention considerate. "He's right. We need to summon the Octessence."

"Our plan." Lucas agrees with Dawn's original wording. "I agree, the timing is suspicious. Which brings us to two questions... are the Octessence willing to fight over this?" he says first, looking to Johannes.
Then the rest, "And if the answer is yes, then the second question is, are we? I am guessing from the timing there's more at stake than we thought. But if the Octessence will deny their power to anyone they don't elect, or help elect... then we're in a difficult situation. Especially if it means they'll side with him." he says, referring to Johannes. The weakness of the Octessence is usually their division. If all eight agree on something, they can challenge the Vishanti.

They're missing something. What?

"Mr. Braddock... he wouldn't be so smug, wouldn't have come here and made this challenge in front of the Vishanti if he wasn't already prepared... he's already summoned them... haven't you?"

"They have been consulted and since they have a stake in this, they want a say. Or they will deny their power to the Sorcerer Supreme and declare war," Johannes said.

"Why? Why would you do this and not tell anyone until the last minute?" Dawn asked.

Damn. She was actually getting angry instead of afraid. Progress. Who knew?

"I mean, okay, maybe we have to talk to them, but there had to be a better way to bring it up."

Okay, thing rules, think loopholes, think jerks... "Unless you already know they're going to vote for you."

The air shimmered and a moment later the Octessence appeared opposite the Vishanti.

Matt is pissed. This whole thing might have been avoided if he'd checked out who would be here beforehand, kept information on all of them at the ready. Perhaps he could have seen something like this coming.

The Octessence are ready to pick this bone and though they've got superior numbers this whole thing could end with a lot of dead people and a complete tool as Sorcerer Supreme. /This/ is one of the reasons he believes such power shouldn't be in the hands of a single person; because humans pull Crap Like This.

He looks at Mordo. "This isn't over."

Lucas frowns. "I dislike the methods used, but in the interest of preventing a war that puts the entire world at risk, I find myself forced to agree... with serious reservations. I dislike this path, but the other one left to us leads to war... but only so long as the Octessence agree that the Vishanti also have their say."

"This is going to be ugly, painful, and someone's going to get hurt. Really, next time folks? Let's NOT do this." Her dark eyes turned on Johannes. "You will regret this in ways that you do not yet understand but will feel fully only when in the clutches of ultimate darkness."

All that needed to be a proper curse was chicken blood. She was saving that for later.

"Then you're an idiot." Shelly shook her head. It wasn't who was /there/ that anyone should be worried about but what other sources of power there were that went unseen.

"Of course they will, Dawn. This was a setup."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]dream_catcher

Lucas nods to Shelly. It was a setup, no question. Then an idea occurs to him.

"There is eight of the Octessence, but the Vishanti are the older, more primordial power. This has been discussed before, I believe, before Strange made his decision to support the Vishanti... I believe that those beyond mortal ken here should discuss the rules amongst themselves for electing a new Sorceror Supreme, then make their decision, with all factors considered."

No matter what, the Octessence come out ahead here. Numbers, and their willingness to pick a fight on the rare occasions they're unified is a trump card... but even they'd be loathe to take on a united Vishanti. And he hopes the Vishanti realize he's stalling for time here.

"Meanwhile, the mortals present can retire to their own sanctums and prepare for the declaration in their own way."

And some of them can try and research and get a jump on whatever Mordo's next step is.

"Are we agreed?"

She almost wants to offer the new guy a little back up, since it looks like everyone else here is ready to jump him, especially Dog Boy and Angry Chick, but Melissa isn't really into making extra enemies right now.

She's got a read on who the major wizards are around here and that knowledge is going to come in handy some day.

"Well, guys. It's real and it's been fun...but it hasn't been /real fun/ so it looks like a draw. You all have a good time doin' your thing." Hood says.

She vanishes instantly after.

Marlow felt something scrabbling inside and ruthlessly pushed it aside. "I don't believe mortal destiny should be discussed by non-mortal beings without a mortal to represent the basic human interests."
