A Strange Quest
Quinn had been thinking about the leprechaun incident and had a feeling it wouldn't be the last time he saw the little annoy creatures. Quinn's magic hadn't been effective and he had to know what to do the next time they came around. Maybe there was a spell or something that would work against them and their magic.

Quinn had to go to the one person who would know about this kind of stuff.

He teleported to 177A Bleecker Street in New York only to find it empty. He wondered where Dr. Strange was.

There was one person who may know. Quinn teleported out to the West Coast and arrived at the front gate of the Defenders.

"Then you're an idiot." Shelly shook her head. It wasn't who was /there/ that anyone should be worried about but what other sources of power there were that went unseen.

"Of course they will, Dawn. This was a setup."

Lucas nods to Shelly. It was a setup, no question. Then an idea occurs to him.

"There is eight of the Octessence, but the Vishanti are the older, more primordial power. This has been discussed before, I believe, before Strange made his decision to support the Vishanti... I believe that those beyond mortal ken here should discuss the rules amongst themselves for electing a new Sorceror Supreme, then make their decision, with all factors considered."

No matter what, the Octessence come out ahead here. Numbers, and their willingness to pick a fight on the rare occasions they're unified is a trump card... but even they'd be loathe to take on a united Vishanti. And he hopes the Vishanti realize he's stalling for time here.

"Meanwhile, the mortals present can retire to their own sanctums and prepare for the declaration in their own way."

And some of them can try and research and get a jump on whatever Mordo's next step is.

"Are we agreed?"

She almost wants to offer the new guy a little back up, since it looks like everyone else here is ready to jump him, especially Dog Boy and Angry Chick, but Melissa isn't really into making extra enemies right now.

She's got a read on who the major wizards are around here and that knowledge is going to come in handy some day.

"Well, guys. It's real and it's been fun...but it hasn't been /real fun/ so it looks like a draw. You all have a good time doin' your thing." Hood says.

She vanishes instantly after.

Marlow felt something scrabbling inside and ruthlessly pushed it aside. "I don't believe mortal destiny should be discussed by non-mortal beings without a mortal to represent the basic human interests."

Dawn swallowed down some of her nervousness. "If you want to stay, Marlow, I'll stay too."

Because no one should have to face all that alone.

"We will vote now," Watoomb said. "There will be no more delay."

Agamotto reluctantly nodded. "Yes. There will be no more delay."

The non-mortal beings went off to the side. Though they could be seen, what they were saying could not be heard.

Akilah turned to Johannes with a deadly stare while gripping her hunting knife. "You think us all just mages? I am a warrior of Wakanda. Do not make yourself my enemy, or I will kill you."

Lucas sighs. The immortals were going to decide with or without them, he was just trying to buy them some time... and din't get the help he was hoping for at all. Clearly the mages of Earth could stand to work on their communication.

He doesn't bother with the threats and gesturing. If Johannes has the power of the Octessence solely at his disposal, its not going to matter what powers any of them have unless Dawn can call on the full powers of an Asgardian god. Anything else is going to be way too little.

It does give him an idea though.

His spirit self extends to lightly brush past Quinn, Shelly and Dawn.
/Can you join me please, while the immortals talk? I require your assistance./

Sure. I take it you have an idea?

/I do, but it hinges upon your sympathetic magic, and Dawn's cooperation. I've drawn too much attention to myself... and we've already been too divisive. I think its time at least some of us start working together.

Yes, we do need to work together or we'll all end up wiped out of existence. The Octessence isn't always down with voodoo, for the record. At least not when your last name is Drumm.

Hey, if it makes this not be such a problem, I'm all for it.

Frankly, Dawn was happier when magical beings weren't in her personal sphere.

/Actually Miss Drumm, it is the precise nature of voodoo that makes you an indispensable part of the plan. Both of you ladies have specific abilities I lack because of the natures of your magic. We also require help from Mr. Braddock, and a piece of the Darkhold, even a small shred. I understand that both Excalibur and the Defenders contested against people using pieces of that tome... please tell me that someone kept one of the ruined pages?

Matt keeps his eyes on Johannes while Shelly and the others talk and the Vishanti and Octessence discuss things. If they /do/ select this clown as Sorcerer Supreme, Matt decides he may have to challenge him on the chance he can shut him down early.

Then they'd have to choose a new candidate, who would be more likely to step down once Strange and/or the book are found. He doesn't see Johannes being that willing.

Worst-case scenario, he only needs a few seconds to fire off his Death Curse and make sure this guy isn't a problem for anyone else after he's down.

Suddenly Shelly understood the nature of what Lucas was asking for. Her father had once referred to the corners of the magic she was about to dip into as 'the heavy weaponry.'

It went past voodoo into the very core of it.

It doesn't even have to be much of a piece. LIterally, less than a scrap...I'm not really on a team so I can't tell you if they have one. She briefly looked at Dawn and Quinn.

Lucas smiles just slightly, then shakes his head.

/Nothing so severe, Miss Drumm. Voodoo, or accurately, sympathetic magic is literally magic through another agent... same way voodoo dolls, voodoo healing made with a piece of the target's hair, and so on work./
He's sure this is elementary for Shelly. But he wants to both assure the others he's not asking for some dark ritual, and also explain to them why Shelly is critical to his plan.

/The Darkhold and the Book of the Vishanti are mirrored opposites. What happens to one happens to the other. With even the tiniest scrap of the Darkhold, Miss Drumm should be able to home in unerringly upon the Book of the Vishanti. And because her magic uses a different agency than most, its unlikely to be blocked unless another agent of the Loa is working against us./

His focus turns to Dawn.
/Which is where she comes in. Asgardians are powerful dimensional mages. If the book is not on Earth, her magic, empowered by the rest of us, should let us travel to wherever it is without hindrance... and the only way to block her travel would be to block the Rainbow Bridge... and I doubt our enemy wants Odin's attention right now. The rest of us don't have that luxury.

No, it is severe. Magical echolocation via the Loa through the conduit of sympathetic magic is the same sort of...requisition if you will that one has to go to in voodoo to do some of the nastier things that most non-practitioners stereotype with the art. You need the item or a reflective totem--in this case a scrap of Darkhold--and a conduit for the Loa to work through.

I'm going to end up a living compass, essentially. A physical manifestation of the Loa. That is the safest route, actually. There is another avenue, but...
she looked at the debate going on. yeah, human compass is a ton faster. I'll find it, Dawn will get us there.

Great. People relying on her. To do stuff she'd only done on her own a few times. And the big one had been with Vincent's help. And that was only cross country. The rest had made been from one end of the compound to the next.

Um. I'll do whatever I can. But I should point out I'm not all that practiced yet.

Unfortunately, you're the only one with a realistic chance of success, since you use a unique method of dimensional transit not available to the rest of us. On the other hand, if you're nervous... if its easier, just open a portal for me. I can make the trip much more rapidly, then Mr. Braddock, with his knowledge of Agamotto's spells can link to me and help you bring the others across. That would leave my physical body vulnerable, but I am willing to take that risk if it would be easier. I am uncertain who else here can be trusted... but we will probably also need more offensive capability. In a fight, I can help defend and mislead, but my abilities do not allow for any kind of harmful effect./

Then let them know what's going on, and be prepared to gather. I was hoping to delay them, but that's not going to happen now, so we have little time. We'll also need the piece of the Darkhold, if someone has one. If not... we have larger problems.

Shelly took this opportunity to physically move closer to Matt to get his attention.

Hey. Lucas has a plan. In a nutshell, we're gonna use a piece of the Darkhold if we've got one and I'm going to use my voodoo hybrid magic to track down the book, then we're gonna go get it and stop this insanity. You in?

Can we all shut the hell up for a bloody minute? Quinn said. I've got a sodding migraine the size of Mt. Everest.

Quinn was kicked back in a chair with his feet up on the table and his eyes closed. It looked like he was asleep, but he had been meditating and building up magical energies. He didn't think he'd be able to call upon any of the Octessence for spells if this went south, so he was building up the energies from England and the universe. Here on English soil and at Stonehenge he was at his most powerful, but it also gave him a killer migraine at the same time.

The voices inside of head made it hurt more. Especially the one woman's. It sounded almost as shrill as a banshee's scream when coupled with the migraine. The blond's wasn't so bad.

I have a piece of a page of the Darkhold. Half a sheet actually. It makes a great coaster on my nightstand.

/Perfect, we're going to need your coaster. They seem to be near a resolution... faster than expected. The Octessence usually aren't so easy to get working together. We'd best hurry. I will return to my physical form now, signal me when ready.
