A Chilly Fall Afternoon (open)
The Ides of October found Cait in the kitchen at Xavier's baking various types of cookies and even a few pies. The Ides weren't something they celebrated here in the States, but back home they still kept a few of the traditions alive by celebrating. The Ides of October were always her least favorite. The chariot race was always fun, but the slaughtering of the October Horse was not and Cait hated it.

This year instead of watching a horse get killed, she was in the kitchen baking.

Corey always comforted himself with the fact that the majority of the horse got eaten and not wasted, but it wasn't his favorite holiday either.

"...Is there cake?"

"No cake," Cait answered. "But lots of cookies and a few pies. Much better than eating horse."

"Mmmm, pie. Utterly goreless pie."

"Mmm. All great. I guess I'll go with apple to get me in the mood for the end of the month."

"You know, this just goes to show how brainwashed we are. We're thousands of miles from home and no one is going to make us celebrate these holidays and we still do," she said and grabbed a knife to cut him a slice of pie.

"If Nova Romans weren't naturally rooted in tradition, the place'd never have lasted 2000 years." He smiles. "Thanks, Cait."

"I know, but most of them have never left the place. We're different," she said as she put the slice on a small plate and handed it to him. "You're welcome, Corey." Points for not calling him Twerp.

"Good point. We're definitely different."

She smiled. "Of course we are. We venture out into the outside world and that makes us weird in Nova Roma. And here, well we talk about and observe festivals that no one else has for thousands of years." She shrugged and grabbed a hot chocolate chip cooking.

"How are you doing in classes?" Yes, you can tell she's a big sister and had a streak of responsibility a mile wide.

"Yep," Corey says, with a tone that indicates that it's a little bit awesome.

"History and Environmental Science are going perfectly. Precalculus is a bit more of a problem, but I'm managing."

Cait nodded. "What about your English class?" she asked. Corey was the type to not tell a person everything unless directly asked.

"Mostly doing fine. Little bit of trouble keeping my essays on topic, but let's face it: Anne Bronte was twice the writer Emily was. Emily had more commercial success, but like that's a reason to study her books instead."

Lucas doesn't spend a lot of the time in the school buildings, but when he does, its usually in the kitchen. Right now, its planning to do some cooking for a weekend picnic, only to find it rather occupied.
"We celebrating something?"

"Camping? Cool."

"Definitely going to have to try that. There enough for me to pack a little for the weekend trip out? The time of year doesn't much matter. Moira, Danielle and I all spent most of our lives pretty outdoor-centric. I think we'd just kind of live in the woods and use our rooms for storage and the really bad weather days if they'd let us."

"Sure looks like it. I bet Moira and Danielle haven't had pumpkin much before."

"You three definitely have me beat. I like the outdoors, but I'm pretty into beds for most days. And my rain tolerance is low."

"Aww. The Twerp doesn't like getting wet." Which of course Cait exploited every chance she got. Corey spent a lot of his life being wet. "There's plenty for you to take with you. I kind of go crazy when I bake."

"Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll let people take what they're going to, and pack up leftovers for camping. And you're probably right about them and pumpkins, not native to their home."
