Happy Independence Day!

Across the great nation of the United States of America people everywhere celebrate the freedoms that they enjoy, the history, government, and traditions of the United States with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events.

Kristoff would, if asked, say that he appreciates this holiday as much as the next foreigner. The little annual parties with the Richardses and the Langs are lovely. He respects the ideals and accomplishments celebrated.

He is a foreigner, though. Twelve years, permanent legal residency, no intention of leaving anytime soon. ...It's just that he never wants to be from somewhere else.

Vincent smiled, privately, at the gathering atop the Baxter Building. Reed and the others had all moved on with the world of course, but they were still the Fantastics. Grimm and Storm had their annual dispute over who worked the grill, all others knowing well enough by now just to let them argue it out until Grimm won like always.

For his part, he was jotting down notes for what would be an impressive display of lights and sound just a little later in the evening. Illusions were one of his specialties, and with the Baxter Building cutting such a mark on the New York skyline, it was the perfect launching point for some spell-work.

Once the dispute was settled and the first round of food was finished, he snagged two plates of burgers and fries and swung around the group in search of Andrea, spotting her near her father's rather large outline.

"Happy Independence Day." He grinned as he extended the plate to her.

Andrea enjoyed the company of the Richards and the other former members of the Fantastic Four, along with the other friends and hangers-on that had been acquired over the years. Her own father was deep in conversation with Ms. Walters.

"And a happy Independence Day to you as well," Andrea said, smiling as she took the plate. "Thank-you."

Zoey loved fireworks and the fourth of July meant lots of fireworks. Mom's new job meant that they wouldn't be in Los Angeles or San Francisco for the fireworks, but Zoey had a plan. There would be fireworks to watch.

It had only taken following Asleif around and asking her every five minutes if she would do it.

Then she talked to Mom and suggested watching them on the beach (where they could build more sandcastles) and having a cookout (hot dogs, marshmallows and s'mores).

Griffen wasn't used to celebrating too many things. He just wasn't a social kind of guy but he found himself at the grill since he wasn't sure about the others cooking. He kept largely quite until people starting requesting things.

He also really wanted corn on the cob.

"Need any help?" Syd asked as she came up along side of him. This was the perfect way of spending the holiday. A cookout at the beach with fireworks provided by one of the local sorceresses. Sydney had to explain the holiday and the reasons why it was celebrated to the Asgardians, but once she did they seemed eager to party. Well two of them.

"More plates for the cooked food would be great. I eventually want to step away from the grill so I'm trying to cook a good amount for everyone," Griffen says nodding towards where there's a large box packed with things hat could be unpacked.

It has platters, all sorts of condiments,plastic plates, and plenty of utensils. "Think we have enough?"

He might have gone overboard but he had no idea how much everyone would want and left overs could be eaten easily.

"More plates. I can do that. I can also take over if you want to step away and grab a bite to eat." She gave him a small smile. The man was...timid. Syd wanted to be friendly, but not scare him.

"I don't know. They can eat a lot." Meals had been interesting to say the least. The amount of food and drink the godlings could put down was amazing.

He gives her an amused grin. "At least we know they like our cooking. I was pretty glad I got in contact with a good butcher's shop in the area too."

He gives her a slight wink. He's warming up to her she isn't scary. "I think I saw tear's of joy when I dropped in yesterday."

He appears happy which is good. "I think I'd like a break in a few more minutes. Just want this batch or burgers and sausage done."

"That was a good idea. I can't even imagine what the food bills alone will look like. Probably more in one month than I used to make in six." Mr. Stark had been kind enough to give her a good salary and benefits. With raising Zoey the benefits were invaluable.

Syd smiled. "I wish I could say the same about when I showed up. Zoey has taken quite a liking to Asleif, much to her displeasure."

"Just let me know when. I'll go get those plates."

"I think it's cute. And good for Aslief. They need to get used to mortal children," he says with the air of a professor.

He wouldn't admit the pay grade raise had been very nice and knowing he would be taken care of with benefits.

"I like butcher's shops. They always have everything you could want and then some." He should know since his grandfather ran one.

Asleif had first been "coerced" into handling a fireworks display in the first place. Then she had been forced to use a scrying spell in order to determine just what fireworks were (because she certainly wasn't going to admit her ignorance by asking).

Now, however, she was content to watch the ocean waves lap at the beach. That much, at least, was soothing.

Eliza would be spending the day around the medical wing. But she made sure to take the time today to call her Dad...to call Matt.

She wanted to make sure he knew she saw him as her Dad here. She just hadn't felt like she had enough of a connection with him yet here. Wishes would be sent both ways and she would try to ease his mind by letting him know she was being careful. He and Elektra had heard about what had happened and Matt expressed he hoped Tasha and Tony would recover.

It was a strained conversation because of that. Eliza wanted to reach out to him but didn't know how. She hesitated after that conversation and decided to call her other brother Jack to send him some well wishes for the day.

Anya was there too (as if she would be any place else). It was far from the usual way of celebrating the fourth, but the family was together and sometimes that's all that was important.

When Eliza was done on the phone Anya approached her. The whole Murdock thing was weird, but in the grand scheme of things it could have been a lot weirder and worse. They were an unconventional family, but it worked for them.

"When this is all over, you should take a trip out there and spend some time with him," she said. "Get to know him better."

Not the normal Fourth for them, but they'd already had their fireworks for the year. Misha wasn't the insomniac Mom and Anya were, but he hadn't had more than a couple of hours of sleep since he arrived in Medical. Not all in one chunk either. His brain told him if he didn't stay awake and keep watch, someone else would get hurt.

"Spend time with who?" he asked, catching the last few words. He put an arm around Eliza's shoulders.

"Dad," Eliza says with a small shrug. "I'd like to. Just, you know, after Mom and Tony are out of here."

No way will she even think of doing anything else. She notes that she needs to get some idea of where she'll do her senior year of high school. If Mom isn't okay by August she thinks home school might be a good option for her but she won't mention that to the others yet.

Misha shot Anya a look at her comment. They were all worried and stressed, but it was no reason to snap at Eliza for what amounted to thinking out loud. "It's a good idea, Eliza. When you're ready to go, I'll be happy to fly out there with you. If you want some company for the trip."

Kalypso had the best seat in the house for the fireworks over New York City. She sat atop the crown of the Statue of Liberty and watched the show.

Sammy watched the fireworks from her parents' penthouse terrace. Dad was pushing hard to get her back under the roof now that the hydrobase was open season for the bad guys. Not that it mattered at the moment. None of them were out there. They were all in the city helping out where they could. Sammy would be in S.H.I.E.L.D. medical later to take her turn at watching out for her teammates and friends.

Cait lay on a blanket on the lawn in front of the main building at Xavier's and watched the fireworks going off overhead.
