Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

	"You never cease to amaze me with your wit and charm, Fury." Tech grins as she takes his arm. He seems to stand just bit taller and smile a bit brighter when she does. Tech does indeed get several greetings (and glares). He introduces his girlfriend Sam to the owner of the diner, Bobby Hopper, and orders the biscuits and gravy.

Alcee Hernon stops by to say hi. "J. Landon, you sure have come a long way from Chelsea Dinner in high school. You didn't get over her for like, two years, right?" Alcee asks. It's clear from his tone that he's not being malicious; he's just happy for his friend...and tactless.

Tech has a long-suffering expression on his face, and seems to relax when Alcee leaves.

"Welcome to Bon Temps." he grins, reaching out to take Sam's hand and play with her fingers.

They have to keep in character, right?

	"Funny how that part is the same everywhere," Sammy said, grinning back. "Run into somebody who 'knew you then' and they have to bring up something you don't want to talk about in font of somebody that shouldn't hear it." Jake had specific reasons to hate her, she supposed, but as long as he was locked up she wouldn't worry about it.

"We all have bad breakups, right? Unexpected situations to deal with. If you'd told your friend that I was your boss he would have fallen over himself to tell how good you are."

She looked at him curiously over the last question. "It's been fun. I'm sorry about the trouble for your family, but I'm glad to see how you deal with stress. It'll help me help you fit into the team and S.H.I.E.L.D. better."

"That would be their loss." Sammy shifted her fingers between his. The waitress brought coffee and advised them that they were waiting on a fresh batch of biscuits from the oven.

Once the woman left, Sammy resumed the conversation. "I thought that about my guns and books," she said, eyes still on their hands. "Alice had no problem dating, and I always turned to the firing range for company."

	Sammy put her free hand on their joined hands. She enjoyed the simple human contact far more than expected, as if her skin was starving for it. "Right now it's a translation of the Shi'ar version of 'The Art of War'. I got it for Christmas and haven't absorbed it all yet. Do you read anything that doesn't need a screwdriver to get it open?" "Ah pointed her in the direction of the Fantastic Four to get some help for her family. Last Ah heard, she'd settled in over in New York and had gotten a job." Tech says. He hadn't been able to check on Reyja recently, but he thought it might be a good idea to do so.

He'd nearly lost his virginity by force to that woman, but she turned out not to be a bad person, after the whole Empress-is-holding-my-family-hostage bit.

"Ah never did properly thank you for comin' after me, Boss Lady." Tech grins. "Thank you."

He places his free hand on top of both of hers and his own.

Sammy intended the words to be light and even teasing, but they sounded suspiciously Not Happy to her own ears. "I think a couple of the girls from the ship are here." "She was nice, after a fashion, but she just wasn't my type." Tech says, shrugging his shoulders. He opens Sam's left palm and begins tracing the assorted lines he finds there. Sometimes, he wishes he'd paid more attention when Old Mrs. Lawson had been teaching him about palm reading.

"Ah don't believe anything that's yours would ever let you go without a fight, Sam. You just have that quality that makes people want to do their best for you. Ah've seen it with the team." Tech says, tracing a line that runs from the outside of her palm to the middle.

That's the second time he's felt the air in the room change when he's said or done something. He feels that he's getting to know her better, so if he'd done something to outright piss her off, she might say something, even if it's about how she doesn't want to discuss this.

This time, however, he only peers at her to see if she'll offer anything more. When she doesn't, Tech latches onto her next comment to keep the conversation going.

"Ah think you're bein' a bit modest, but there's nothin' wrong with that, Fury." Tech says, as the biscuits and gravy finally arrives.

"Ah hope you like the food, Sam. It's really good here." Tech says.
