Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

The delivery man turns around and walks down the steps from the porch to go back to his car. In just a minute, he is driving away from the Landon home.

Sammy's flowers also have a card attached, which says the following.

I hope you like this last surprise. You deserve at least this for putting up with Bon Temps in general and me in particular. You can take your hand off your Glock now. - Jason

	Jason stops dead in his tracks as he is, indeed, behind her. Did she stop time to find that out? Or was that her super-agent reflexes? He's not sure he will ever know the answer to that mystery. Tech gives Sammy a long, slow blink at the idea of Sammy's thank-you for the flowers. A slow, goofy smile spreads across his face as she shrugs. He'd toe the dirt under his feet if there was any.

"It was the least I could do." he says.

"Well, let us eat while the food is hot and then we'll talk about things. Gran is resting comfortable with her food. I don't expect we'll hear much from her the rest of the night. She's got two days' worth of stories to catch up on." he says.

She left the flowers and resumed putting dinner on the table. That is, she made sure there were plates and silverware, and the takeout containers were set between them. Her reasoning was undomesticated logic - fewer dishes to deal with. If it were just her, she'd eat right out of the containers.

"Believe me, what we collected at the warehouse more than made up for any trouble, and even the trouble was fun. You have been full of surprises."

"Yes, the trouble was even fun, too." he grins, serving himself some pasta. Eating straight from the container occurs to him for a moment, but he decides not to, so as to prove to Sam that he does have home training.

If he weren't trying to leave an impression, he'd just eat from the box like usual. He'd also do it in his lab.

"I almost can't wait to get back to the Helicarrier. I have ideas brewing." he says.

	"I can almost see the smoke coming out of your ears," she assured him, laughing. She spooned pasta in Alfredo sauce onto her plate. It smelled heavenly. "Oh!" She went back to the bag and retrieved the garlic bread in wrapped in foil. "It's not pasta without garlic bread." "May I ask what the doctor had to say about your grandma?" Jason waits until the garlic bread is served before he speaks, eating some pasta as he thinks over Gran's situation.

"He said that she's a strong woman and because she's so active things were not as bad as he's usually seen them. However, he's indicated that she's also getting older and that so much activity could end up being detrimental in the long run. When he suggested that Gran cut down on some of her social activities, she nearly stared a hole straight through his head." Jason says, sadly.

"She's very involved the community, Sammy, and making her stay home more often would really upset her. I mean, I could get her to do it if I wanted to pull out the big guns, but I tried reasoning first.

I told her that her great-grandson is going to need her when he shows up in December." Jason says.

"That quieted her down pretty quick."

"I bet it did. From the way she talked about the land and how the family's been here for two hundred years, the next generation has to be important to her."

Sammy tore a piece of bread apart and bit into the garlicky, buttery goodness. She closed her eyes in bliss.

"Is there," she said after a moment, "anybody in town that has experience as a companion? Home health aide or something similar? Drive her around, take over the heavy lifting, so to speak? Come a few hours in the afternoon to clean some and help out around the house?"

"It still mystifies me that your parents are likely the same age as my grandmother and that they still look like they're in their prime." Jason says.

"Blackmail, however, is a tactic that I'll use only when reason fails, which should be shortly." he says. "Maybe I should brush up, though. Someday, I may have to use the same tactic on you, Sam."

He smiles the prospect.

"Consequences? Hm...then I'll have to make sure I find something good. Massages may be involved." he tells her.

He takes a moment to chew over what she says about slow aging being a family trait. Does that mean she's older than she looks? Or that she'll still be young when Jason himself is turning gray? The second thought, for some reason, is a lot more worrying to Jason, though he couldn't say why just now.

"Do you ever wonder how that will affect your outlook on things, when you friends are all getting older and you, maybe, are not?" he asks.

"What you're talking about is a bribe, and I can be selectively bribed." She lifted her glass of ice water and teasingly toasted his heinous plans to bring her to her knees...um....

She hurried on to catch up to the conversation. "I have friends in 'the life' who are facing the same situation. I imagine we'll deal with it the way our parents do, with careers that we love and holding on to the people we love as long as we can. I wonder if my manipulation of time will counter the effect in me, but only time is going tell that one. I'm too young for any study to show results this early."

"Well, it's good that you have a plan, at the least. Your ability, to me, seems to be one that will only increase as you get older. Who knows? There may be no adverse consequences of any kind for you, regardless of how often you can use your ability. The key is to figuring out how to unlock that potential." Jason says.

Yet another mystery for his mind to work-upon.

	"It increases bit by bit now because I work hard at it. I'm acutely aware of how time flows and what can be done with seconds. My training program focuses on increasing both my control and my limits." She didn't mention the fear she had of finding herself inside a temporal pause and unable to stop it. 	"I still hold that you can do more than just stop time. We may have to devise a method to unlock your potential to speed up or slow down time. "No, not like you, Sam. Aside from there being no one like you, the only other mutant I'd come across during my time with Savoy's organization was Jake. I think Michael Savoy would have thrown a party if he'd found someone like you to bring into the Organization. However, being a mutant is /definitely/ not something to advertise in the South, especially these days." Jason says, thinking again of Fargo and Joey DeMills, who'd moved to Fargo to help the organization get a foothold there.

"But there were tests we'd conducted on Jake's ability, just to determine what he could do versus what he couldn't. I could probably modify or make a couple of new tests to aid in discovering more about you." he says.
