Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

	"I'm not worried so much about another war, because it'll happen. Only what S.H.I.E.L.D.'s role will be when it happens." Her hands tightened a little on the wheel. "It's not. People either forget or they're too scared to realize that pound per pound, mutants are the greatest weapons available. It's only making a bad situation worse." She shrugged. "S.H.I.E.L.D. can't do anything about it. We are the mutant response team and we're going to butt heads with the Mutant Response Division when it comes to any activity in the US. The next world war could very well be based on mutant relations and so far the world's running track record on the subject sucks."

Two days ago, Jason would have asked if she recruited him because he mad a "great weapon". Two days ago, before he'd kissed her for the first time, he would have wondered if Sammy was using him.

Now, he didn't wonder.

"Yeah, especially after everything that's happened just /this/ year alone. The stuff at the Statue of Liberty was bad, but...3,000 dead people in Fargo really set mutants back a long way. I still want to know what the bastards who did it were hoping to accomplish." Jason says.

"Don't apologize. I kinda like seein' you so passionate about somethin'. It's a stark contrast from your normally collected and cool personality." Jason tells her, shifting in his seat a bit to look out the window.

"You are right, though. As long as the people who did this are still out there, other mutants will suffer, no matter what it is they can do." he says quietly.

"It's worse than that. You don't have to be a mutant, you just have to be different enough to be labeled. I'm not a mutant, but the detail won't matter because I'm different. I teased Dad that my career should be assassin, and now I wonder if he's but me in that position sometimes."

Sammy shot a glance at him, a wry smile on her face. "So you think I'm normally cold and unfeeling?"

She grinned even though her cheeks turned red. She was teasing him and he'd again turned her word back at her. Very wily, that guy. She was enjoying her few days with him more and more.

"Don't give up the game, I'm building a reputation for the future. Especially that bit about the spot behind my knee. Seriously, I'm concerned about the role mutants will have in the future. If war breaks out, it'll be one of the major reasons, and warfare will be big business to a lot of folks."

"Well, if anythin', I'd be worried more about Genosha than America. That Magneto guy's powers are pretty fascinatin' and definitely scary. I'd neutralize him first on account of how good he is at stirrin' people up with his words." Jason says.

"Then you got the hate groups like Friends of Humanity and Humans Against Mutants preachin' hate. We had a couple of those groups stirrin' stuff up around here and killed a friend of mine my senior year of high school because he got his girlfriend pregnant. She was a mutant, not him.

No one could ever prove it was them, but...their meetin' hall burned down three weeks later with several of them inside." Jason says, remembering that day.

"They shouted some names about who they thought did it, but no one could ever prove who it was." Jason says.

"Dad's had to deal with Magneto over the years. I've never met him. From what I've heard, and it's only my view, he's too focused on one thing. Most hate groups are. It's just that here in America, we have fewer boundries and less restrictions. Every man is king of his castle, the right to bear arms, it's my way or the grave. This country is both the biggest help and worst enemy minority groups have going."

I tried to watch it, but I didn't get past the first season. It makes no sense. Although, I can see the appeal of a desert island for a couple of weeks' peace and quiet."
