Names
They story goes that names -- their meanings, their personal significance in a family -- can end up having influence on a person. What do you think?

Couldn't say, myself. If I'd been a boy, Mom wanted to name me after my grandfather, Vernon Van Dyne. Dad just wanted 'Something French.' So they went with Vernique. French and before that Greek for Bringer of Victory. Same etymology as the name Bernice, so some would say I lucked out in that I didn't end up named Bernie.

I certainly like it.

Dad told me it was because he and Mom like Jerry the mouse of Tom and Jerry but Mom said it was after an old boyfriend of hers and she liked the name. I’m still not sure which to believe.

It's funny when the stories don't add up, isn't it?

Yes it is, and both says the other is lying when I try confronting them on it. I swear it seems like they have no idea where my name came from.

I was named after my Grandmother. She is one tough old lady and I’m proud to be named after her.

I never got a chance to ask my mother why she named me what she did.

Well. I'm named after one of my dad's best friends...who also used to date my mom. Awkward.

As for the names I picked for myself...well, Superboy was my dad's old name. I wanted to continue the legacy and make him proud. But since I'm in another dimension, I'm going with Powerboy. A relative of mine gave me the idea. Besides...it fits.

I think if I'd been a Henrietta, there'd have been some trouble from dad, but he and my mom's ex weren't friends.

I picked mine from perhaps my favorite word. I like cosmopolitan butterflies, comopolitan cocktails, Cosmopolitan magazine, and generally cosmopolitan living.

Mom wanted Dad to name me, and Dad wanted something that wouldn't be too out of place in New Morlaidh. Sir Dinadan was a close friend of Sir Tristan (which is where I got 'Tris' from), and was known for being a witty joker who thought that courtly love was a waste of time.

I'm...not entirely sure what that says about my parents' expectations of me.

Wasn't he the one also known for paying attention to people instead of their clothes or armor? There are worse knights to be named after.

He was, actually. Sir Tristan didn't even recognize King Arthur until Sir Dinadan told him who he was.

Dad thought Sam Fury sounded like a good, solid name for a kid.

I think he was expecting a son.

Daddy says that I remind him of three of the most beautiful women he's ever known, but that my name comes from the person he most admires and respects.

I don’t remember what my real name is, they just kept calling me Subject 0001 at the Hydra base I kept in until I destroyed it. After escaped I found myself in Philadelphia and I’ve just been using that as a name though I’ve shortened it to Phil.

Petra was what Mom was able to argue Daddy down to after they'd never got around to planning a name, and they needed something on the birth certificate ASAP.

Dad really liked the name, but everyone at first thought he was making some kind of joke. He never realized what he was actually saying until Mister Logan pointed out the connection between it and his powers.

Orphanage was giving the guys A names. That's all. Nothin' special.
As for my codename...well, I thought about Sentinel but it sounded dumb so I stuck with Green Lantern.

My mother told me she was too hopped up on the drugs to remember why she named me what she did. Bit too close to my no good old man's name for my taste but far enough away that I'm not bothered to change it.

And really, what else am I gonna call myself in this costume? Not like I'm one of those Osborn losers that can paint his costume another color and just go with something dumb like 'Gray Goblin'.
