Giving Thanks (Nov 26)
“We need to be more grateful. I think there is no true character without gratitude. It is one of the marks of a real strong character to have a feeling of thanksgiving and gratitude for blessings. We need more of that spirit in our homes, in our daily associations, in the church, everywhere. It doesn't cost anything, and it is so easy to cultivate.” - Ezra Taft Benson

In America today is a day for being thankful for the things in people's lives. Today was a day to celebrate family, friends, prosperity and health with food, family and friends. It is a time to reflect on what is important us and to recognize the gratitude we hold for having those things in our lives.

"This," Moira said, looking at the television. "Isna football."

"It's not," Cait agreed. She had baked pies and bread yesterday. Today someone else could do the cooking. Baking was her strong suit, not cooking.

"Because Americans can't come up with anything original." Cait was technically an American as well as a Nova Roman, but at heart she was Nova Roman.

Out of all the people in the compound, only five celebrated Thanksgiving, but Syd didn't think the others wouldn't mind celebrating a Migard holiday where food was involved. The Asgardians alone ate enough for twice their number.

The day before Sydney and Sarah, with Zoey's help, baked pies and bread. Four apple, four pumpkin, two cherry, two blueberry and ten loaves of bread were baked.

The day of Thanksgiving, Syd and Sarah were up early to start the food and had recruited some extra hands belonging to Aridis and Svalin to help with preparation. It never hurt having others to help peel potatoes and carrots and husk corn.

Four turkeys, two hams, two geese and two ducks were roasted. Twenty pounds of potatoes were peeled and cooked to be mashed. Five pounds of carrots were peeled and cooked along with two dozen ears of corn. The meal was kept simple because so much food had to be made.

Marlow followed the preparations with great interest. She was useless in the way of kitchen help, but she was unbeatable when it came to staying out of the way.

Svalin had no problems peeling and chopping. Those two things involved the use of knives. Cooking was a different story and one thing she failed with excellence. She could cook something on a spit over open flame, but that was about it.

Sarah was happy to be cooking so much. She enjoyed working with Sydney. She had once or twice pushed some cranberry bread at Marlow to nibble at. But mostly she was a flurry of activity cooking and moving around p;platters of food for when they would be feeding everyone.

"Sydney. Would you like me to crack open some wine? Svalin. Would you also like a drink?" She was happy to have them helping in the kitchen. "We're almost done so I think we can celebrate just a little."

"Wine would be nice," Syd answered. "I've been looking forward to eating this meal all day. I guess we can call them and start eating. I don't think there's much left to do."

The past year had been a roller coaster ride for Natasha, her family and for the Avengers, but they had made it through. Natasha was thankful for her husband (that idea was no longer strange), her children (the idea of four of them was still strange), her family (a new nephew and Ivan) and for her friends.

They had all seen their share of good times and bad times, but through it all they had all stayed together.

She gave Jarvis a hand where she could, mostly with preparation and chopping and peeling.

A few times Daniel had poked his head into the kitchen. He had been very hungry and was having trouble waiting around for food.

That was when he found himself helping. Somehow he had gotten talked into making stuffing. He wasn't sure how it had happened but he wwas mostly okay with it.

Alpha Flight did not celebrate Thanksgiving on this day. Canada's thanksgiving was last month. Alex spent the day as a guinea pig asleep on a chair in the rec room.

Today is a difficult day for Lucas. He doesn't go inside to try the cooking, doesn't help with the preparations - unusual for him, and doesn't make any effort to be social, unless someone approaches him out by the lake.
For some of the first nations, Thanksgiving is almost a time of mourning, remembering all of the wrongs that were visited upon the tribes over the years by the white settlers. All of the good grace and cooperation that marked the first Thanksgiving forgotten when even today, there's not a lot of hope on a lot of reservations, and a lot of families are reliant on the food banks for anything resembling a Thanksgiving dinner.
For others, it is a time to try and look forward, and remember that original spirit of friendship that allowed the pilgrims to survive their first winter, and to hope that that kind of unity can be achieved again.

The spirits are just as mixed. Some angry, many sad, some hopeful, very few in any place to wish to celebrate. And it is with these that Lucas is spending his holiday, talking, comforting, praying and remembering.

Moira goes out, once or twice, to sort of check on him without really engaging him in conversation. She doesn't want to intrude on things right now when she knows she really doesn't Get anything much about this subject.

For all that, he's always happy enough to see her. He makes an effort not to upset her or to get too into depth, while trying to make some sense of why he's not being social or helping out inside. She never seems to be an intrusion, whatever he's up to.

"Super-duper," she says with a grin, placing down her cooking creation on the counter. Taking the hair-tie that she normally wore on her wrist off, Valeria pulls her hair into a ponytail. "Need any help in the culinary department?"

Kalypso never made plans for Thanksgiving. Mom blew with whatever breeze took her and was infamous for never sticking to plans, so it was much easier to not make any and just do whatever they decided on that day.

Jack's plans included a phone call home to Mom and swearing on his favorite set of pencils that he would be home for Christmas, then sleeping in as late as he could manage.

He had a pie from the bakery and left Kal a message that he'd be at home working on his semester project if she was free later.
