Celebrating The Birth of a Nation

Across the great nation of the United States of America people everywhere celebrate the freedoms that they enjoy, the history, government, and traditions of the United States with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events.

Despite being a Brit by birth, Quinn had spent as much time in America as he had in England and he celebrated American holidays as well as the English ones. Today was July 4th and that meant fireworks and a cookout because the team was mostly Americans.

Quinn was more than happy to go shopping for the required items for a cookout, including a grill. They were still in the process of getting the items required in any headquarters.

It didn't take too long and in no time he had the grill going and the food ready to be put on. Later he would provide fireworks.

Casey had never celebrated a 4th of July in his life. While he did not know all too much about it based on what he had heard about it sounded like it could be fun. So he brought a keg of Beamish which always guaranteed a good time back home.

July 4th in the US was always a holiday Cait looked forward to. X-Men tradition was a cookout and then fireworks over the lake. This year she even had more reason to look forward to it. Aaron. After the cookout and Aaron willing, she'd grab a blanket and they could watch the fireworks together.

She got up early and helped in the kitchen with food preparation. By the time noon came around, everything would be chopped, sliced, mixed and ready to go.

Defenders

Sydney hadn't planned on being in the United States for July 4th, but the dig kind of got canceled after the dig leader was hospitalized after an on-site accident and the site deemed too dangerous to keep going. So she returned to her job with the Defenders.

That morning she was up early and helped Sarah get the food ready. Asgardians, Celts and Olympians had hearty appetites to say the least. It was a lot of work, but everything was ready when it was time to fire up the grill and get things cooking.

Maybe Asleif/Dawn or Marlow would be kind enough to provide fireworks later.

Marlow was in a festive mood and not quite so her vague self. Fireworks would be no problem.

Keeping them down to an acceptable level and not signaling airplanes or hovering space craft would be another issue.

In the meantime, she helped in any way she was allowed.

Anya would have been in Boston with the Thunderbolts to celebrate the holiday, but Steve was getting out of the hospital this weekend and she was going to be there for him. As it was, she was going to spend the holiday with the Avengers and get to be there for the yearly cookout.

She didn't help with food preparation in the kitchen because of that lifetime ban, but she did help set up outside. Not to mention keep a close eye on Steve to make sure he wasn't pushing himself.

Tasha was glad to be home and felt good enough to brave the Avengers mansion for the annual cookout. She stayed away from the kitchen, but helped ready things outside.

Most holidays have been completely beyond Halbjorn's understanding, and he just sort of nods, shrugs, and enjoys the food. Strangely, even not being remotely American, he seems to get this one right off - comprehending celebrating military victories that result in freedom from control of outsiders is apparently right in his holiday-brain's wheelhouse.

He helps with setup and getting things ready. He also seems quite happy to help deal with the large supply of bbq'ed meat and alcohol, of course.

Daniel loves the 4th of July, in part because it always means one thing - no matter what else is going on, his dad takes him to a pro baseball game, following the Mets, wherever they're at. Today is an especially festive one, since they're playing in Washington D.C.

He's also extra excited, since he was allowed to invite a friend, and immediately called Ellie to see if she wanted to go to the game and dinner with the Grimms.

Kal loved the 4th of July and the fireworks. There was something about exploding things that always fascinated her. She would spend the day with Jack and find a great place to watch the fireworks.

She was thinking that either atop the Empire State Building or on top the Statue of Liberty would work.

Andy aids in preparing the food and getting to know the rest of the Defenders. There's lots of food and drink and he's ready, willing and able to help out with it.

After a procession of some of his least favorite days of the year, the 4th couldn't come fast enough. Nick does the same thing he always does: hit the road and drive to the nearest motorcycle rally. Thankfully, on the 4th of July, there's a ton of those in Texas.

Great bbq, lots of beer, hot enough that the women aren't wearing many clothes - and even less as the beer supply goes down, loud rock, country and bluegrass music blending into some kind of cacophany of electric guitars and banjos.

Yeah, this is a great day.

Joey is Australian by birth, but he's been in America to know that Independence Day means several things...but the most important of these is barbecue.

He aids in the cookout, providing fire where necessary and hanging with some of the younger kids while the food is prepared.

Holiday or not, there are camerapeople staring at Pauline today, long before it's time to meet Miss Evangeline for dinner. Well, not their fault. But still. She doesn't feel like having personal conversations around them, but it's too quiet.

So everyone within hearing is treated to her own rendition of 'Cool, Cool, Considerate Men,' and a few deadpan lines of rather mildly sociopolitically caustic dialogue from the play 1776. In honor of the occasion and all.

A holiday for blowing things up? Yeah, the whole day is like candy to Crosshairs.
She gets a few fireworks from the local stand - so she can take them apart and do the chemical analysis to figure out what they use for different colors and intensities, then spends the week before the holiday making her own fireworks.

Her display is not legal in any sense of the word. She doesn't have anyone's permission. The fireworks themselves are unquestionably threats to life and limb. And true to the old adage, she loses several fingers, and puts her eye out a couple times over the process of lighting them - this usually results in the missing digit or eyeball getting strapped to the next high-explosive bottle rocket while she grows a new one.

Regardless, though its only so long til she has to abandon it once the police locate her very hard-to-get-to launching pad, its still by far the most spectacular fireworks display New Yorkers get to see tonight.

The 4th is a holiday to lots of people, but for SHIELD, a lot of it is a big pain in the ass. There's always threats, chances Washington's show will be disrupted by someone trying to make a statement, and, of course, the 4th would be a natural target date for terrorist actions.

Aleks volunteered for the day shift, doing a ton of patrols, security checks, being a visible presence at high priority locales and so on.

After the double shift though, he's got arrangements for a fancy dinner at a place with a view - good place to be off the streets and leave work behind for a bit. He invites Alice to join him, not sure if she has other traditions for the day or not.

As far as Lucas is concerned, this is less holiday and more good reason to be nowhere near the city. He heads as far out as he can reasonably get, and holds a small bbq at his campsite for anyone else who wanted to come out and spend the holiday in a lot quieter fashion than most.

DJ has gotten used to the cameras following him everywhere. And today, he's going to take advantage of it.

He heads for the park and putting on an impromptu concert. He doesn't have the whole band, but that's ok. There's plenty of bbqs around he can mooch from, and its a great excuse to play the Hendrix version of the Star Spangled Banner... then flip his guitar around and play it left handed, played a few times amidst a lot of Springsteen, Cash, Mellencamp and, just because he can't put his punk roots entirely aside, some acoustic takes on Daft Punk and Milkmen.

Sammy spent the day reviewing files, making notes, and avoiding her cell phone. She wasn't in a mood to party, although she had an open bottle of Dad's favorite whiskey.

It was hardly touched. Sammy wasn't much of a drinker.

Aine had gone home to mom’s for the 4th of July. Mom always had a party at their home in Wyoming for all the former thunderbolts from her former team that had managed to stay on the straight and narrow. It was always a good time and the fireworks were simply amazing given the amount of people there who liked explosions and knew how to do them right. She always though Dad’s show was the best.

Aine had invited Luna to come if she wanted to.

Starbridge watches some of the festivities and speeches on the television. Pageantry he understands. Boy, does he understand it. The emphasis on freedom instead of strength and unity was, as usual, a bit odd. Not that the Terran politicians and activists weren't interested in strength and unity. It was just a matter of what was publicly stressed. Knowing that even a show of force had to be cloaked in acknowledgments that the individual would not be excessively constrained.

Starbridge wished he could have the luxury of thinking like that at length.
